I shouldn't reply as it seems that it will only cause more uncalled for attacks, but since you asked: What I want is to not be accused of doing what I didn't do and intending what I never intended or suggested. IOW, to not be a part of a discussion as a politician would run one, full misdirection and mis-statements and no desire for actual dialogue. I won't be the one to raise the ugly level but have no problem pointing it out when I am it's target.
Quoting my "I'm confused" out of context with "bingo" as a response is an example, btw. My confusion is solely as to why/how someone could react to an incredibly mundane metal working question in the way that some have and the very existence of personal attacks on me for asking. I'm still confused as to the why. It strikes me as being bizarre at best. But as my wife says, it is what is.

Thanked: 1587Well, be honest. You must have suspected your thoughts would be a bit "confrontational" as evidenced by the title you chose to give this thread.
In any event, go try it. No one is stopping you.

We explained everything to you from the fact that your assumption on angle was incorrect to the fact that the Wheels could not index correctly on the edge vs spine..
Everyone was polite and went step by step after that yer on yer own ...
In fact the only thing we did not address was that there is a very good chance that an extreme hollow grind razor might very well crack in there

I'm really struggling to understand what it is you want.
If you are seeking encouragement, I tried to offer that along with my suggestion to get a shave ready razor to compare/contrast.
If you are seeking advice that comes from (collectively many decades worth of) wisdom, I think that was shared also.
As for attacks. I felt like you did a fair share of lashing out, but tone is not always easily conveyed...so take it for what it's worth.
Regardless, nothing I have offered was intended as discouragement or an attack. I can assure you that if I made a habit of attacking new users, I would not have lasted here very long....and I darn sure would not have learned as much as I have.
I wish you well, and sincerely hope you don't get discouraged with straight razors as a result of your efforts. Razors are something that I and many others here enjoy. The depth of this enjoyment is probably reflected in our depth of passion for helping beginners to realize success in this endeavor (and to help them avoid problems).
There I go again assuming something about you (that you are a beginner). I'll tell you why I assume this. I think most veteran honers understand that powered mechanical sharpeners for very thin, very hard steel can lead to poor and potentially dangerous results.

Thanked: 1936I'm actually going to start all over, remember the surburban and zr1 notation? OK, you could put twin turbo's and nitrous to my surburban and it would be bad assed, right? Knife sharp and razor sharp is literally two different worlds. The fact is that for my kitchen knives, my last stone is normally 1K or 3K. I am not a sushi chef, so that is more than enough for my and most households. THIS is where we START honing razors (read that sentence again). I looked over the Chef's Choice 120, 130, 15,1520, & 320. Honestly, I wouldn't put my scrub knives in that thing...much less a Wusthof blade. Without truly looking at the "sharpener" with my own eyes, I would say that the blade is not supported behind grinding wheels, so you wouldn't end up with a small (microscopic level) toothy edge...it would be like a cross-cut saw. This is fine and really works for the kitchen, but not for razors.
Please understand that there are a lot of Master & Journeyman Level craftsmen here at SRP who's specialties are grinding, steels, heat-treating, honing, and so on. Hang out a while, listen, you will learn that they are here to share the knowledge & not bash you. Straight razors are old school, we have come a LONG way with technology since they came into use...but they are still straight razors. We have better steels, stones, and heat treating methods...but it still takes a craftsman to put it all together so that you and I can get a quality shave out of what was once a chunk of steel. These craftsman are quite open to learning new stuff as long as it works, but a surburban is still slower than a corvette. Be a sponge, listen, learn, try and try again...there are no shortcuts to becoming a journeyman at any craft. Always remember, just have fun at itSoutheastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thank you and God Bless, Scott

Thanked: 1184I think the problem here is the engineer wants to try an experiment in front of a crowd that knows what the results will be. What he does not fully understand is that, as people who restore and love these old blades that last thing we want to see is yet another irreplaceable blade ruined for the sake of satisfying ones curiosity when it has been proven time and time again not to work. It is bad enough to hurt 1 while restoring or using it.
While in their hearts these men wish to be civil and encourage your learning it just goes against their grain and may show in their tone of voice. Some more than others but as you suspected no less when you posted this thread in the first place.
I looked into the situation myself and found some interesting data on the device you wish to use. Apparently your machine with the 15 degree angle may not be designed to do as you think. The Chef ’s Choice sharpeners are designed to create the 15 degree edge with a multi-bevel gothic arch geometry that provides more metal support for the edge, therefore making it more durable. Great for a knife but this will in no way work on a razor. Well, unless you want your face to fall away like a slice of tomato.
I hope my post does not make you feel attacked in any way. And please ignore my sig. :<0)Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.
