From time to time the Razor Gods must be paid.

    Been there, still doing that.

Honestly, if I am feeling a little "off" I try to put of shaving until I am more focused. I usually have most of my blunders when experimenting with a new grip or angle. I had a couple of flaps like you described on a wrinkle( on cheek where dimple used to be). I learned not to approach this wrinkle from the side. This is not really advice, just sharing

No nicks in your first weeks is considered good in my opinion, congrats
Holding the razor against your skin without shaving should be avoided as you probably know. Try to adjust your grip or the razors angle in the air instead even if it might be a bit hard sometimes. But I guess it is easy to make a mistake like that even though you know that you shouldn't do it.

I'm with Hirlau and Ludvig. You will end up looking like you got attacked by a cat a few times, and the theory is much easier than the practice. I earned my stripes on my first shave!

I allways have a alum block and proraso cut healing gel close by, its almost like cheerleaders sitting beside my shaving soaps.
And for me it was the same first times i never had a nick but the more you shave the bolder you get, its searching for the fine line that you cannot cross at that point wen your learning.

My first nicks where wen i shaved against the hair grow on the second pass.
The worsed one i had was under my nose and bleeded like crazy, to make the story short the worse part of that was that i had a cold and a runnie nose so it gave some troubles and pain.

I have found experimenting with new angles a great opportunity to appease the Razor Gods. With time, the nicks get smaller, but the alum lasts longer.

That is precisely the way I first stalled the engine when I was learning to drive. First four lessons, no problems, fifth lesson: overly confident.
