Honestly Bob, at just about every meet I have been to, there is one person at the table who cannot get the AHT to work for them, I saw one guy fail it with a shave ready edge at the 2009 NC meet..
I am talking at skin level..
I have not found an end all be all test for a bevel set that works for everyone, I thought it was the AHT back in 08, but by 09 I had learned it wasn't, there are 3 good tests, they have to be able to use at least one of them, and trust it...

Yea, for sure there are other tests to see if the bevel is set. I was just wondering if the OP had done any testing at the 4K level to try and determine if a bevel was set before going on to the 8K level. Anyhow it was just a thought and likely not a good one at that.

Thanked: 485For me, I can shave leg hair at 4 before I go on to the 8. I don't 'pop' them, I don't suspend them in the air and chop them, I don't calibrate them, I just shave them. But I ensure I can shave them well, cleanly, and without leaving some untouched. If not, I persevere on the 4k. Then, when they shave 'OK' (not great, but OK) I go to the 8. If I go to the 8 too early I'll never get there. But, from there I do pyramids on the 4/8 and then on to the 16 for a final polish, maybe only 20 laps, or maybe even a small pyramid between the 8 and 19.
My advice is go back to the 4 until you get it to shave arm or leg hair quite well, then progress to a 4/8 pyramid. That's simply what I'd do.
The hones I use are a Norton 4/8 and a Shapton 16k.Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

Thanked: 3221What Carl said about testing at the bevel setting stage/grit level before moving on up the progression.
