    Default Well it's here but........

I just got my dovo best quality a little bit ago but it didn't pass the hanging hair test I know, I know, I can hear everyone yelling -don't get hung up on hanging hairs! But I have a well calibrated selection of hair that was tested true time and time again on my shavette.

At at any rate there is only one ultimate test-the shave test! I haven't shaved since yesterday morning since I was anticipating the straight coming today so I am off to give it a go and will report back in an hour or two on how it shaves.

Congratulations to your new arrival and good luck with the shaving. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Was it honed, or straight from Dovo?

Either way, you are correct that the shave test is the test with which you should be most concerned.

It was supposed to be honed as this company says they hone every one they sell. I'm not so sure but that is neither here not there what really matters is how did it shave. It shaved ok.

I have shaved with shavettes for quite some time and tried many different DE blades (personna, gilette, dorco, derby, shark, feather, ect) and this reminded me of a dorco blade with about two weeks worth of shaves on it! I will not mention the company because I don't want to get into bashing and everything else about the purchase was pleasant. The shave pulled and tugged no matter what angle and I found myself using more and more pressure which is never good. After 5 passes and a clear water I stopped with a DFS but with some irritation to boot.

I didn't strop before hand so I didn't kill the edge. My strop should be here tomorrow so I will strop and see if that helps. Otherwise I may have to learn some honing skills earlier than anticipated. In the end it will work because I don't give up. I am all in

I could return for another honing as I'm sure they would oblige but who wants to get their first straight just to part with it for another week or two? Not me. Not yet. If I can't bring this around I will pay another here to hone it up for me. Nothing but a learning process.

Plus I always have the shavette.

That doesn't sound very good, you should have a better experince than that. Lets see how it goes after the stropping.
You have a good attitude about not giving up.

Surely it would be just as quick to return it to the original vendor.
Anyway I digress, it could be, for want of a better turn of phrase, the human factor. It will be worth giving it another go first, as I understand it straights are a touch different to shavettes in use.

I have a pasted strop from whipped dog due to arrive soon so maybe a few laps on that with a good stropping will do the trick. It wasn't a horrible first experience and I am spoiled on a damn sharp feather blade. Lol.

Thanks everyone and I will update this thread over the next few days.

    What Ed says.

While I'm still terrified of DEs, they do provide a nice shave and like shavette's they are brutally sharp and I found them very harsh...so comparing them to a straight is a bit like apples and oranges.

It takes a while to get to know a straight, how it shaves, and they do shave differently than a DE or shavette...so give it a couple of tries, before you send it back. Where did you get the razor if I can ask?

I would try a regular strop first, but that is coming from someone who doesn't use pastes. Have you done any stropping practice, yes I know it sounds lame and a bit daft but just a bit to get the hang of it using some newspaper and a butter knife would work. You can also use newspaper as a real razor strop too. Just cut some strips and put them in a bulldog clip, if you pull the paper out of the clip you are stropping too hard.
