Thread: Price range for starter kit?

For a shave ready razor, strop and possibly a brush. What kind of price range can I expect? Not looking for high end but want to ensure I get a quality razor

You can expect to pay between $100 - $200 for a good set.
WhippedDog has good inexpensive gear, while Straight Razor Designs has better gear at a higher price.
If you want to piece a kit together, the classifieds section in the forum generally has good deals.

You will need, at a minimum a razor ($40 - $80), strop, soap and brush. A mug would also be nice, but you can use a coffee cup or small bowl from your kitchen (I use covered sugar bowls from WalMart at about $2.50).

There are other good sites to get gear from; generally any site that advertises on this forum is reputable. If you find a different site, you may want to ask here about whether or not it is reputable. I have been bitten by a less than reputable site by not following my own advice.

Someone had mentioned whipped dog earlier, I actually I think I may have a mug already... quite older than myself! Does whippeddog have a webpage? Or is he just a seller here?

No need for a mug at all if you face lather. My experience only is that when you buy an expansive starter set one or more of the components aren't what you want, or less than adequate. To stay simple, I'd go with a starter set from here Garry's Sample Shop (no relation), which gives you a good quality start in wetshaving with a DE for $35. Add a Whipped Dog razor and strop and you are on your way!

I found an antique website that was selling 'shave ready' razors. got the razor and strop for $40 then picked up the brush at wallyworld for less than $10.00. I did notice that just after that razors seemed to jump in price on that site. same sets now over $100.
