The $200 budget includes getting a strop, brush, etc.

Um all good choices but I would look up Larry at whipped dog straights.. Get his sight unseen deal with poor mans strop... He also sells brushes... You can get everything you need for under 100... Straight shaving is not for everyone... But his deal will help you decide

Nothing wrong with the less expensive Dovo, as a matter of fact a lot of the more expensive Dovos are the same blade with more options and or bling. The value of the DVD depends on who the tutor is. Always buy quality, you cant go wrong.

I have the Dovo best as well as the Dovo silver steel ebony(first and second razors I purchased), both from SRD and they are both great shavers. With that said, I would recommend a vintage razor from one of the guys on the forum.

To be clear it has nothing to do with the vendor, SRD has been nothing but great to me. I love my SRD strop.

I just prefer my 2 vintage razors compared to my new Dovo razors.

I would like to thank everyone for their replies. I will take all of them into consideration. Very Helpful!

Do brushes matter to much or can I breeze by with a cheep one?

From what I've read here on SRP it seems that the most popular "first razor" is the Dovo Best.
Reasonably priced brand spanking new, no nonsense great shaver.
Even after accumulating a few exotic and expensive razors, that first Dovo razor continues to hold a respectable position in most members rotation.
Perhaps purchase the Dovo and the rest of the items from Whipped Dog?

You can easily make do with a cheap brush, at least until you want to trade up to something better or bigger. It depends a bit on whether you want to face lather or bowl lather and whether you will be using soaps or creams.

Do you live in the United States... Target sells the van der Hagen deluxe kit with soap and bowl and brush... It's cheap and effective...

I agree that the starter gear from Larry is a worth considering. I bought the sight unseen razor, poor mans strop and silver tip badger brush and was only a bit over $100 delivered to Australia. Shaved well, no worry about dropping it or cutting the strop, plus Im planning on the razor being my learning razor once I move to honing.

Certainly no regrets from my purchase. Then you can take time to save some more $ and get a really nice razor to add to your new collection.
