Default Bad Day withe the Blade

I have probably only shaved with my straight razor about 30 times so I guess getting cut is probably part of the learning process. I have been getting good shaves and certainly much better than I do with the disposable. My confidence had grown and I even tried a few areas on my head this last weekend. However, today was a rough day.

Everything was going pretty good until I went for a second pass on my cheek to catch a small area I missed. I saw the cut happen in the mirror and I knew it was going to be a real bleeder. The stypic pen was no match for this one and I had to use a gauze and direct pressure to get control of it. It took a couple of minutes to get it to slow down enough so I could see the damage. Thankfully the cut is only a about 2 mm long but I still ended up putting a bandaid on it to keep control of it. I have to admit that my confidence is shaken but I'll try again once I heal up.

As once said by some guy:

The first 3 months you may look like you have been fighting with a cat.
After a year you will shave with a little nick here an there.
After three years you can call yourselve a Journeyman.
And as long as you live you are on your way becoming an Expert.

    State v. Durham, 323 N.W. 2d 243, 245 (Iowa 1982) (holding that a straight razor is per se a "dangerous weapon").

See it as a healthy lesson in respect. Sometimes confidence can be dangerous.

Confidence is rarely dangerous, while over-confidence most always is!

2mm is pretty minor. It won't even leave an obvious scar. Sometimes we get a little too confident and forget that when we aren't on top of our game we can get bit. We all have been bit, some more than others.

That's always a bummer... I have a spike razor and there have been a few good shaves interrupted by an earlobe getting in the way. Talk about a gusher.

Still, these things make you appreciate the good shaves that much more!

+1 RezDog well said. I find confidence has two edges (lol). It's good to be confident but keep a healthy dose of concentration. Earlier in the week during my second pass I lost focus and didn't lay the blade down on my face gently enough, bam blood right away. Too much pressure trying to force a trouble spot. Then I nicked my chin. Got to stay focused too the end.

This made me remember a lesson from my flight instructor. "Never run out of ideas and altitude at the same time". Point being you need both confidence and concentration. So saddle up for the next round!
