Thread: Hollow blade shave

After learning the basics, I preferred heavier grinds, but now I love the feel of a nice 7 or 8/8 full hollow - it tests your technique too

To me the wedge just plows through and not much singing. The weight of it reduces the feel. On the other hand the double hollow sings in different pitch with the lower coming from the wider. And the light blade requires a little more push to get through a wide pass, That being the whole blade on the cheek or neck. Blah blah yada yada ...... I have never met a razor I didn't like :<0)

I like and own them all. For me, my best shavers so far are a 8/8 full hollow and a 7/8 1/4 hollow. The full hollow seems to get more removal in the first pass than the 1/4. No idea why.

As has been said, it's the edge that does the shaving, much of the rest becomes personal preference.

I have most of the grinds as well, the extra hollows also presented some challenges to me to learn, but now, the bigger the better, 9/8 hollow ground is my preference, but am just as happy with any nice razor.

I'm not sure I understand the responses. I've only got 2 razors so far, a 5/8 and a 6/8, both full hollows. The way I understood it, a shave ready edge is a shave ready edge, so the difference between a half hollow and a full hollow is just the weight and the "flex" of the blade. And the "song". Is that not right? I guess I'll just have to buy a half hollow razor now. In the name of research, of coarse.........

I started out with the full hollow grind but a friend turned me onto a near wedge Sheffield 7/8. it was great. then the same friend sent me a very heavy I. Barber. I sent it to Mr Max and he turned it into XCALIBER. It would cut it's way through any beard. VERY smooth and comfortable. I still use the hollow ground but I do believe I would shave with an ax if it was sharp enough. guess it's just each his or her own. just have to try them all.

That's about the crux of it...it's all down to personal preference vis a vis size and grind preference...but you are correct that any shave ready edge is shave ready...it's just how you want to get there is where all the fun lies.
