My way of saying there's no need to experiment when there are so many use specific products out there.
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

I know I'm kind of a beginner but I have waged war with rust for many years on my guns and knives and to my knowledge the best way to prohibit the onset of metal cancer is a $5 oil impregnated gun cloth. I figure if its good enough for my guns its good enough for my razors.
Sometimes I question my sanity, occasionally it replies.

    Agreed!

Ever since I found these silicone impregnated razor socks (which are re-purposed gun socks), that's where my razors live after a thorough drying and a dot of Tuf-Glide on the pivot area.

Where would a fellow purchase a few of those? I have put a drop of hoppes gun oil on my pivot to keep it young.

Quite a few members and some other buds I know simply bought a sock for a long gun and cut it down and had them sewn to fit.

I got mine from Mens Essentials...there's one in the States,

Grooming, Shaving, Skin Care, Lifestyle - MenEssentials

And I get them from Mens Essentials in Canada, which also ships to the States:

Grooming, Shaving, Skin Care, Lifestyle - MenEssentials

    Cheers!

You are dead on. Try and stay away from any vegetable based oils for Straight Razors, Strops and even more importantly any Sharpening Stones that use oil. Tuf-Glide for the money is a good one that doesn't need a lot of effort.

"Like dissolves like", any carbon based substance, like carbon based oils, should not be used on metal.

Mineral oils are much better - I use Tuf-Glide, Ballistrol comes to mind, there are lots.

And yes, that will turn into a gummy glue!

I also store my blades in silicone impregnated razor socks, they look much like a razor sized gun sock.
