I can't really speak for anyone other than myself but variety is nice and if one razor needs a honing I can just pick up another one and take care of it when I feel like it/have time.
For lots of reasons. Some have more then one for honing reasons. Some have more then one as a hobby. Others have more then one because they are looking for the zenith in shaving. The list for it could be/is endless. I myself have many for more then one reason, but it boils down to for me that each and every razor performs differently. This is also true for honing also, none hones the same. And for me it is a useful hobby, I don't spend much, and once something is restored, sharpened it is something that can be used again.
For the purpose of shaving there is no logical reason to own more than one maybe two razors. For most here it is a hobby and being a hobby logic has a snowballs chance in Hades of surviving.;)

If you put that aside there is absolutely no reason to own more than a single razor. But these days we have too much free time and disposable income, so we spend it on things we enjoy such as hobbies. Even less than a hundred years ago this wouldn't have been the norm for those not born into privilege.
This passion tends to get away from you quickly. I thought get a second razor to prolong the life of the first blades edge. Now in the 150's I realize these little beauties are my drug addiction. God the money spent!!! Uggggggh....
Well, neither the money nor the razors are going to do you any good once you're dead, and until then I enjoy the razors a lot more than I'd enjoy the money.
I remember the razors I thought would be very nice to have when I first started - some months later and I realized they are pretty pedestrian and I don't care much about them anymore. Their place was taken by razors I still consider very special and leagues above the initial ones (e.g. tortoise heljestrands, ivory rodgerses, interesting grinds, and exceptional manufacturing quality).
I intended on saving money with one to shave. Internet reading, cheaper vintage razors, nostalgia, addictive personality, awesome shaves, the list can go on. My real problem is it is not only razors but bowls, brushes, soaps, aftershaves, strops, hones, towels, shave den creation. It has been quite a journey I wish I started when I was 18.
You will see on this site, in several sections (razors, brushes, hones, etc) acronymns such as RAD, BAD, HAD. The last two letters stand for Acquisition Disorder. When this 'hobby' fits in rationally with your overall budget and is a part of discretionary income....you are simply having fun, learning an old skill, being directly involved in history. But when you have to have something at any cost and the spending exceeds the discretionary income zone, you now have a disease. You will know when you are out of control, like being a kid running down a hill hitting that point where you are going faster than you can actually move and you go down. But, you might not forget the thrill of going so fast and just climb the hill to do it all over again. There representatives from all economic strata on this site, from millionaires to guys living on cardboard with a Macbook Air and a collection of 280 razors. Go slow.....use the search box, and get as much stuff as you can as quickly as you can because it is getting more expensive every day.....just kidding about that last part.
You're speaking of R.A.D (Razor acquisition disorder) it runs rampant, there's no cure....LOL
I think maybe it would have been to avoid a dull razor, or a broken razor at one time. I would think a minimum number of razors to have would be two and that would be to try and avoid these potential issues.
Besides having a spare in case of damage or inability to hone a razor when necessary I went past two razors out of curiousity - wondering how blade shape and steel origin might change the equation. (It does and it doesn't.) Back in the day you probably could've tried your buddies razor or gone to any barber to see how something different shaved.
More than a pair is just self-indulgent. Not that that's a bad thing. :D
It's kind of like screwdrivers -- for 99% of the people 2 would be all you'd ever need -- a medium sized phiilips head and a medium sized flat. But most people (speaking for myself) have a wide range of screwdrivers from very tiny to very large and of different handle materials... a bunch of very similar ones that wind up being duplicative , yes, but not exactly the same and never excessive. :hmmm:
Oh my god!
There are people here who own 250 razors???
And I tried to explain to my girlfriend why I need 2...
Yet - I can't not be jealous of you...
Took me some time (and i'm still unsure) to decide if my phone translated your massege or you actualy wrote in hebrew... the conclusion is that the hebrew is too good for autu-translate...
Is alex the one from strazors.com?
I think my next razor will be from him..
Oh crap I'm over excessive ! Tc
Even way back in the day, they made 7 day sets. In theory you used a different one each day of the week and only needed to hone them once per year. That being said, I have about a 25 day set! lol!
Multiple razors – why?
Silly question… Why not?
Reminds me, of the old saw… The Old Bull and the Young Bull looking down on the valley at the herd.
The Young bull, says “Hey let’s run down the hill and”…
“Let’s walk and do them all.”
In my younger days it used to be a rotation of as many pretty young women as I could accumulate. But in the words of blues singer Bo Carter, "My pencil won't write no more," so I accumulate pretty razors instead. ;)

:rofl2: YES! EXACTLY! I don't have too many at one time but I usually have more than I need since I only use 1 or 2. I try to sell off or give away the extras and take the money and reinvest in one that I think I might love. What ends up happening? I usually stick with my 1 or 2 and restore and sell the new one and keep looking. I like to restore and then sell them dirt cheap for newbs and in a few instances give them away. I don't endorse RAD or HAD unless I was selling to make a profit.

All of the reasons mentioned are great excuses to tell my wife when I come home with more razors! :)
I like having them in rotation and part of the fun for me is "learning" the particular qualities of each different razor I own. All of them shave well, but no two seem to shave alike.
As a NEWBIE with one shave under my strop, and one straight razor in my stand, I can say that I am planning to have at least three, in order to have one to use, and one as a back-up if I need to send one off to be honed. That said, it seems a bit problematic because many of the vendors seem to have a problem keeping any in stock. Praying REAL hard that this doesn't take off like my knife/fountain pen/firearm hobbies did...;)
Each razor has qualities that make it best for it style or type. What is your favorite kind of meat??? Beef , pork chicken lamb???.... What are the best kind of ribs? Beef?? Pork?? How are they prepared??
Same rule applies to razors. So many are the best for their class, type size, what do you like best? what gets your face to BBS . Does a forged blade feel better than a stamped one?? Wedge?Half Hollow?Full Hollow?? 5/8,6/8,7/8.....You cant speak on it till you apply your skill set and the best tools to something irriplacable(your face)..
Then there is soaps and brushes and all those variables.
Yeah I have the disease. But its better than alcholism or drug addiction, and I swear I am going to thin out my collection....soon.. no I swear...really.:gaah:
I have 6 fishing poles, 4 black powdah guns, 2 center fire guns, 2 longbows....I ain't stopping at (1) razor .......
If we were men cut from another cloth and time we would be collecting women for our harem and palaces across our land. Be here we are in America cica 2014.
Simple answer
Because I can:D
I always was tempted to collect knives. A friend of mine and I both had a thing for knives. But I had no practical use for anything but my kitchen knives so I couldn't justify a collection. Figuratively speaking, FIGURATIVELY, razors scratch that same itch. I can appreciate and collect blades that I actually have a use for. But from a practical standpoint, there is no real NEED for more than a few razors. But ask yourself how much you NEED most things you buy/own. Do you need all the sport coats you own or could you get away with only one or two? Do you need the sports team shirts or hats you might have? The number of flat screen TVs you may have? You might be into sports, stamp collecting, wine, gardening, art, cycling, camping, or straight razors. But whatever winds your clock, you're probably spending more on it than others might justify or understand. It has little to do with need.
