Thread: Multiple razors - why?

Hello gentlemen!

I see a lot of men mentioning that they have more than one SR on rotation.
What is this rotation?
What's the reason to own multiple razors, putting aside the fact that their shiny and fun and make a nice collection :]

I can't really speak for anyone other than myself but variety is nice and if one razor needs a honing I can just pick up another one and take care of it when I feel like it/have time.

For lots of reasons. Some have more then one for honing reasons. Some have more then one as a hobby. Others have more then one because they are looking for the zenith in shaving. The list for it could be/is endless. I myself have many for more then one reason, but it boils down to for me that each and every razor performs differently. This is also true for honing also, none hones the same. And for me it is a useful hobby, I don't spend much, and once something is restored, sharpened it is something that can be used again.

For the purpose of shaving there is no logical reason to own more than one maybe two razors. For most here it is a hobby and being a hobby logic has a snowballs chance in Hades of surviving.

If you put that aside there is absolutely no reason to own more than a single razor. But these days we have too much free time and disposable income, so we spend it on things we enjoy such as hobbies. Even less than a hundred years ago this wouldn't have been the norm for those not born into privilege.

This passion tends to get away from you quickly. I thought get a second razor to prolong the life of the first blades edge. Now in the 150's I realize these little beauties are my drug addiction. God the money spent!!! Uggggggh....

Well, neither the money nor the razors are going to do you any good once you're dead, and until then I enjoy the razors a lot more than I'd enjoy the money.
I remember the razors I thought would be very nice to have when I first started - some months later and I realized they are pretty pedestrian and I don't care much about them anymore. Their place was taken by razors I still consider very special and leagues above the initial ones (e.g. tortoise heljestrands, ivory rodgerses, interesting grinds, and exceptional manufacturing quality).

I intended on saving money with one to shave. Internet reading, cheaper vintage razors, nostalgia, addictive personality, awesome shaves, the list can go on. My real problem is it is not only razors but bowls, brushes, soaps, aftershaves, strops, hones, towels, shave den creation. It has been quite a journey I wish I started when I was 18.

You will see on this site, in several sections (razors, brushes, hones, etc) acronymns such as RAD, BAD, HAD. The last two letters stand for Acquisition Disorder. When this 'hobby' fits in rationally with your overall budget and is a part of discretionary income....you are simply having fun, learning an old skill, being directly involved in history. But when you have to have something at any cost and the spending exceeds the discretionary income zone, you now have a disease. You will know when you are out of control, like being a kid running down a hill hitting that point where you are going faster than you can actually move and you go down. But, you might not forget the thrill of going so fast and just climb the hill to do it all over again. There representatives from all economic strata on this site, from millionaires to guys living on cardboard with a Macbook Air and a collection of 280 razors. Go slow.....use the search box, and get as much stuff as you can as quickly as you can because it is getting more expensive every day.....just kidding about that last part.

You're speaking of R.A.D (Razor acquisition disorder) it runs rampant, there's no cure....LOL

I think maybe it would have been to avoid a dull razor, or a broken razor at one time. I would think a minimum number of razors to have would be two and that would be to try and avoid these potential issues.
