Thanked: 0New to shaving, looking for a mentor.
Hello everyone. My name is Quote, and I'm new to shaving.
Not just straight razor shaving, but shaving in general. Up until about a month ago, I looked like Jesus. I decided it was time to start looking like a normal person, and since I'm a Linux guy, I realized I wasn't gonna be happy with Gillette Pro Glide or what not.
I shaved this morning with a straight razor for the fourth day in a row, and today, I managed to get my chin nice and smooth. I felt so accomplished.
Well anyway, there are still a number of questions I should get answered, so I am looking for a mentor. My main question is this: what do you do when your face starts sweating and half the lather is dripping off before you get to shave it? By listing this question here, I am hoping to find a mentor who has a similar face and has had similar issues such as sweat and mild acne. So let me know if you would like to be my mentor, or if you can just answer some quick questions about awful oily skin. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to SRP! Good luck on your quest to find a mentor. I'm sure there has got to be some mentors in San Francisco area. A good idea is to hit the quick links button (under SRP goods) and then click on view SRP staff. There you will find a list of mentors and where they are living. Give it a look and then maybe PM one who is near to you. You will find lots of support on this forum. Everyone on here will steer you in the right direction. I am very new here myself and have already recieved tons of useful information. Ask and you will recieve.

Thanked: 0Oh I didn't realize that mentor implied in person. I was just thinking someone to answer some of my personalized questions, and I had planned to visit The Art of Shaving for a lesson or two. An in person mentor would be great, but I don't think it's necessary. Either one would be very helpful.

For most all of your questions you can just post in the forums and somebody will answer them, usually pretty quickly. Welcome to the forum and please ask away on any questions you have, the search feature will also help to find info quickly.

Thanked: 0Cool, I'll post some questions probably tomorrow then. It said in the beginner's guide to start off by requesting a mentor, so that's what I did. Thanks for the help.

Hey there quote. To answer your question about sweating, just apply some more lather to the area, you could also try cold water shaving too. I can't help you with the oily skin or acne though except to say not to use pre shave oils and wash your face thoroughly before shaving.
Your request for a mentor locally is a good idea, face to face you will learn a lot, a lot more quickly.Bread and water can so easily become tea and toast

Welcome to SRP Quote: I would suggest visiting the Preshave Preparation and Shaving With a Straight Razor sections on the Main Forum Page. Lots of good information. Also go to youtube and look for geofatboy and lynn abrams straight razor shaving videos. Ask questions on the forum and you will receive lots of advice. Happy Shaving

Thanked: 0I'll definitely try cold water shaving, I wasn't sure whether that would work okay. I'll also be sure to look through the preshave section. Thanks all, such a nice community.

Welcome Quote to SRP. I just looked through the active mentor's list and the full mentors list and found two active mentors, one in Silicon Valley and the other in Oceanside, plus one that just lists location as Kali. You might want to PM one of them.
Ed's suggestion of a cold water shave is a valid one. I have sensitive skin as well as sensitive to certain products and a number of them were solved by using cold water. If a cold water rinse as the last step in your shower not to your liking try a cold water soaked towel instead. As a pre shave try rubbing in against the beard grain a little dab of Cremo or Kiss My Face then lather over that. I am a little puzzled by the sweating other than to think that you have been going the hot shower, hot towel, hot bathroom process. If you think about it our ancestors didn't have the hot water availability we have today and they most likely used lukewarm, room temperature or cold water for shaving.
The acne is another matter. Were you suffering from acne before you shaved your beard off or did it appear after? If after if possibly could be a result of how you are shaving. Make sure that you are stretching skin as you shave to help raise the hair off your face and try to avoid too many passes which can irritate your skin and give you what can look like acne as a result. I think most members would agree with me that in daily life we don't need to have a BBS everyday, just for special occasions. In general a WTG and XTG shaves are more than adequate and , all things considered, leave you looking presentable since the last thing anybody else is thinking about when they look at you is what kind of shave did you have that day.
You can also go to the members page and under advanced search type in San Francisco. You'll get a list of members that listed San Fran also. The problem there is they may not currently be active or have dropped away completely. Check their activity level and choose accordingly.
And asking questions in the forum can bring you answers from around the world. Help comes from unexpected places.
Quote, put acne in the search box on the upper right side. You will be surprised by the numer of threads you will find that can give you help with the acne problem.Last edited by Razorfeld; 08-18-2014 at 10:31 AM. Reason: Additional info
