    Default It has begun

Started funneling cash to my daughter for my birthday present. She has the link, she has the info on what to get. Pretty soon she will have enough cash to purchase the straight I want to start with. Not long until I'm complaining to my wife about nicking myself shaving. I can already see her rolling her eyes and giving me some smart ass comment about it.

Welcome to the fold. I hope the link was for a shave ready razor from a reputable vendor. I look forward to seeing the pictures and hearing about your progress to the perfect shave.

However, I chose poorly based on just my own research and wanted to put my toe in the water with much invested financially. What I ended up with was a razor shaped object ("RSO") that really is not worth comparing to a real straight razor, which I keep as a visual reminder to not be dumb, and a strop that I now only use the cloth part of!

I say post the link to the straight razor and let those more experienced lend their wisdom - if they confirm it is a great buy, then wonderful. If they confirm it's not, then you are saved from having your first experience be lack luster.

    Erosadis,

Avoid starting your straight razor experience on the cheap, because that will reflect on your shave. If you need to, spend a little longer saving funds and buy a quality razor, strop, brush and soap. No, you need not spend a fortune; rather, buy the best you can within your budget. For sure, buy from a reputable vendor, and those advertised at SRP are. Beyond that, if you have questions, please post them. By the way, welcome to Straight Razor Place.

Awesome plan. Your wife will be fine once you get the hang of the shaving until your soaps take over the bathroom. SRD is a great place to get your first "kit"

I am sure you know that that is a suitable brand from a reputable vendor. A wise choice. There are many vendors with good reputations but a lot of traps out there for the new user as well. Glad you are not about to step into something that will leave a bad smell.

    Erosadis,
That is an excellent choice for starters, and the three-inch strop will serve you better. You are doing the smart way. Good luck.

Thanks. I have watched many videos and done a lot of reading. I think this makes me an expert...an expert on watching videos and reading posts.

Obie, I was going to go with the two inch strop but read a post by Haroldg48 about three things to do for starters. A smart man learns from his mistakes, a wise man learns from the mistakes made by others. I am neither, but I am a cheap bastid and don't like paying twice for something I can pay for once.

I do appreciate all of your help.

    Erosadid,

I see you have a fine mind: you listen to advice, evaluate it and then proceed with what will work best for you. Good show. Please keep us apprised on your progress.

Shaun! You know that if, a big if, you reach the perfect shave one of two things have/will happen. One, no need to ever shave again, you've reached nirvana. Or two, you are in razor heaven where the effort is to try to not have the perfect shave just so you have something to while away the eons.
