4th Day Questions and Comments
Today was only my 4th day, feeling much more confident on my cheeks. I think I need to do a little more XTG as I am still not getting as close as I would like.
A little razor burn on my neck that is visual but no discomfort. I'm thinking that I have to be a little more careful with the angle of the razor. Thoughts on that?
I also cut myself on the right cheek from an improper hold of the razor while trying to get close to my mustache. Nothing bad at all or unexpected. Do you trim down along the outside edge of it or sideways towards the edge?
Stropped about 50 times prior to shaving with what I felt was light pressure but going to try even less tomorrow.
I started to attempt to shave under my lip but it seemed that the razor was catching on the whiskers, maybe just to tentative a start but stopped there. Any thoughts on that.
Did get all of the cheeks and neck done, but see I need more "muscle memory" with holding the razor for different strokes and at the right angle when not doing the easy flats of the cheek.
Still doing a once over with the cartridge razor when I'm done with the straight but already ending up with a much closer shave than with just cartridge alone.
I am really enjoying the "rituals" of straight razor shaving.
Not going to quit or get discouraged. I'll just keep practicing

Thanked: 1587Angle and stretching will help with razor burn, as will making sure the edge is shave ready - I'm assuming that bit is OK. Also in the early stages your skin is getting used to the new way of shaving and a little redness etc shouldn't be unexpected or cause concern.
When I trim around my moustache and goatee I always go up/down, never sideways. I find using the tip of the edge and the heel of the edge (depending on what side you are trimming) helps a lot in these areas.
As for the razor catching under the lip, that area is probably every male's densest beard growth. It could simply be that, or it could be that your edge could use some more work to make it a bit sharper (maybe some more stropping, for example).
Sounds like you are doing well!

Have had a mustache for about 40 years, so lower. Can't remember what the upper looks like. Wife and kids have never seem it. Okay, the wife used to be able to see through it.

Good lord... did I really ask that question?
Can have a redo on that one?
I've stopped shaving straight down on the lower lip. I always seem to either catch the tender lip skin or stall in the tough whiskers. Instead, I go diagonal on the first past, XTG on the second and ATG on the third. For the clean up, I go ATG again but with the blade flat against the skin below my lower lip and use very light buffing strokes. That spot is a critical one for me since I can feel it with my upper lip and stubble there really bothers me. Using the above technique, I get under my lip BBS virtually every time...
