Obviously I can't speak for everyone else, but as for me:
- The hair under my chin doesn't match the rest of my face. It's super heavy for some reason and because I'm quite aware my stropping skills aren't nearly up to par for a perfect edge, I know there's some tough cutting there, so better safe than sorry for now.
- Yes, I do believe that a DE instills some confidence. If you do dig in with a DE, there's a limit to how much skin you'll remove. With a straight, well, I shudder at the damage that thing could do.

Thanked: 0I say this as a newb myself so lake it witha grain of salt. I am still working on all the aspects of my shaving.
I think the trick is to "know" that the blade cannot hurt you. I went into my first shave that way and I have only cut myself three times (never more than a nick that I could get with a Mach3). Once with a spike and twice on my first shave. I have been at this for a month now. All I do is know that many others before me have shaved more than once safely and that there is not real serious danger only a percieved one. This "knowledge" takes away all fears. Fears I think are what cause cuts in the begining. Be confidant and everything should be fine.
Say to yourself "I am a MAN and nothing is dangerous to me."
