I decided on and bought my hones as soon as I started SR shaving and was mostly swayed by my love of rocks and a thread I read on SRP. I do love sipping a bourbon and refreshing my razors on a fine translucent ark. Having said that; takes time and oil. I also had some of my razors sent out and they were pro-honed on Naniwa superstones. I looked at my maintained, arkie edge and the naniwa edges through a microscope. The Naniwa edges looked nearly perfect, my edge looked crude in comparison. Some of that would be my inexperience but those Naniwa edges looked amazing.
Just Monday I put my favorite razor on a hard ark and then finished it with the translucent. Couple of passes on pasted linen, stropped and had the best shave of my life. Something really satisfying about shaving off an edge you've maintained.
Great advice from the original poster!
Nothing really wrong with the way you went. The reason I recommended the above-mentioned hones is that it is easier path to getting a good edge. Naturals can be tricky and IMHO are advanced honing topic. Again YMMV.
