Those are horn scales that have been dyed in a 'faux tortoise' look. They're the biggest ones I've ever seen. You should see the size of the original box this razor came in! Originally Posted by quidditchfan073

I decided to try and make the biggest I think I could still shave with. I cut the blank out today.

I shaved with a splitting maul that was shaped like a quarter hollow razor. It had a 4/8 bevel. Total size edge to 'spine' was something like 64/8.
