Two year Anniversary
For you beginners just starting out. I have some advice about SRP. Today is my second anniversary of joining SRP and I'm still a self-declared beginner.
- Read it thoroughly starting in the library part Straight Razor Place Library - Straight Razor Place Library, before the forum.
- When you come to the forum, register, and include your location (city, state, country). You'll be surprised to find out there may be some experienced members nearby you who can really help you!
- Pay attention to the status of the members whose posts you are reading. Pay careful attention to the words of those identified as mentors.
- Soak up all you can about every aspect of shaving, then use your judgement, or PM a mentor to ask a question privately before you leap at a product, technique, etc.
- Go slowly; read & learn first, try second.
- Watch videos linked from the site.
- Buy only what you NEED at first and buy from a quality vendor that is recommended here, or from the classifieds on the site.
- Enjoy!!!!!
I have many new friends, have learned many new things about wet shaving, have been "gifted" by senior members, and have found a really fun way to shave every day using fine tools.
Most of all, keep reading and keep asking questions, but in the end your face is different than everyone else's so you're going to have to do some experimentation to find the combination of products and techniques that work for you.
Again, enjoy! I have, and I give a huge thanks to all who have helped me, some without ever knowing it!Just call me Harold

Good advise, Harold. Indeed, this should be enjoyable and effective.
You DO have an advantage of being a mature and highly intelligent individual.
Some of our younger members may do quite well using this advise!"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

Gee Tom, I'm blushing!
Actually, I think I'm pretty much an average bear, but with more time since I'm mostly retired, and more 'maturity' because I'm old, but I do hope some of this starting will read and think about their path a little more before going nuts with RAD, HAD, and all the other ADs and before taking off on a path that may be some other newbie's opinion, as opposed to facts established by years of experience that the long time members on SRP have documented.Just call me Harold

Harold,
As my friend Tom has said what you wrote is Great Advice!
So many of those who decide to try an older but better way of shaving want to learn 'Everything' and All At Once!!! Such as; My razor won't shave so I bought some hones and I'm going to sharpen it
At times they have only been at it a few months or sometimes less/and they haven't even learned how to properly make lather and strop let alone the angles/But they can hone a razor !!
At times when some of us try to get them to slow down and learn the basics they get all torqued off.
I've posted time and time and time again that this age old art takes Patience! If someone doesn't have Patience, then they will fail. However with Patience, they will discover an older but better way of shaving.
Learning this age old art takes time and it's a long strange trip, but it's well worth the journey!!

Why doesn't the taco truck drive around the neighborhood selling tacos & margaritas???
