Thanked: 0Mineral Oil
Hi all,
When I got my SR, the fellow told me that it's good to coat the blade in mineral oil, and to get mineral oil in and around the pivot pin in order to keep water and moisture out. The only problem is that I can't find any mineral oil... ANYWHERE! During one of my trips to a random store (that, by all accounts, ought to have had mineral oil), they presented me with something that was "like" and "pretty much" mineral oil.
What they gave me was Terra Nova NaturOil. I can't seem to find much about this stuff on the internet, and it seems to be more for protecting wood than steel.
Does anyone have any experience with this stuff? Can I use it for what I need to use it for?
Thanks for any input.

I think I found mineral oil at CVS or someplace like that. I personally don't oil my blades (never had a problem with any rusting, knock on wood), and wouldn't use anything that is not designed to protect steel. I have some Tuf Glide somewhere...

Thanked: 634I also do not generally oil my blades and have no problem. I use them too often for them to need oil protection. When I sell a razor and ship it I put a light coat of 3-in-one oil on the blade.

I use mineral oil on my twist-to-open safety razors, putting a couple of drops down the handle after cleaning. I don't oil my straights so I can't comment there.
Like mentioned above, I suggest looking at drugstores near the laxatives.

You can also look in the baby section at the pharmacy, unscented baby oil is just mineral oil. That's what I have been using on my razors since I started.

Go to a pharmacy and asks for Nujol (TM). It is a blend of mineral oils used as laxative. So pure it is also used for infrared spectroscopy. Do not drink. it

Thanked: 1081You dont just have to use minetal oil, any oil that protects steel from rusting can be used. I personally use Balistol. It can be found on amazon cheaply and can be used on just about anything from steal, wood, leather even animals coats. It is medical pure white oil so it doesn't have to be wiped of your razor if you've stropped before oiling. The smallest bottle will last years, I have the 15ml pen applicator that ive been using for at least 2 years and its still going strong.

Thanked: 3215Yup, a drug store. I too do not oil my blades, except blades I put away for storage, and razors I ship, wrapped in paper and plastic Ziploc bag to protect from weather.
I also use Ballistol, on a QTip, have used it for years, most sporting goods and knife shops carry it.

Thanked: 0I have literally tried every store I can think of: all drug stores, grocery stores with/without large pharmacies, hardware stores, knife shops, sporting goods stores, Capital Iron (a store that purports to have "everything," which is where I got this NaturOil), Wal-Mart, Costco
In the drug stores, when I ask, they take me to the oil spot and look puzzled, before stating something along the lines of "well it used to be right here, but the tag is gone and the spot has something else in it." A few checked their computers and said it's no longer listed in their database. It's as if they are not selling it in Canada any more, or at least not in Victoria.
Regardless, I'm more interested in this NaturOil stuff, since I already bought it for $8. I've pretty much given up finding Mineral Oil, but am keeping my eyes open.
But has anyone used NaturOil or does anyone know what it is? I've also got a ton of throwing knives and a Samurai Sword I would like to protect.

From what i see on the net.
Don't use it. It's a wood finish like tounge oil.
It will dry and harden!
Again do not use it on your blades.Mike
