Thanked: 0My sister-in-law wants to try and construct one from some sort of heavy cotton fabric. Anybody tried this, or have some patterns?

First off all, welcome skunkfunk to SRP. As for a travel kit, the fabric would be duck cotton, a heavy weight fabric used for many, many things. I'm sure if she looks in the fabric stores, like Jo-Ann's, in the pattern section she should find a pattern or two in the craft section of patterns. Alternately, you could design a roll-up type with the pockets, slots and loops that you feel you would need and let her make it for you. The possibilities actually are endless and you would have a one of a kind. If no pattern exists find and show her a carpenter's roll-up that is used for storing and carrying things like chisels and screwdrivers as a starting point. Harbor freight is a good place to look for those.

Depending on how long I'm travelling for, I take 1 or 2 SRs, a small travel strop, my cheap horse hair travel brush, 1 pot of cream. What I don't do is leave something out as I don't have room. I make room. If SWMBO can manage makeup bags, hairdryer, hair straighteners, hair curlers, shoes, shoes and some more shoes, I can manage my shave kit!

Skunkfunk, my roll-up kit is made from 10 oz cotton canvas. The canvas is wax treated but I don't think it's really necessary. Frost River specializes in waxed canvas canoeing packs so it's probably why they use it for the Dopp kit.
