Gone are the days of heading to work with pieces of toilet paper stuck to the face. The styptic pencil or alum block has become the forum standard.

So let’s see how the forum deals with cuts to the face.

First aid wisdom and efforts at practicing medicine without a licence point to standards like:

Rinse out the wound with clear water. Soap can irritate the wound, so try to keep it out of the actual wound.

Leaving a wound uncovered helps it stay dry and helps it heal.

Most minor cuts and scrapes will heal just fine without antibiotic ointment, but it can speed healing and help reduce scarring.

Antibiotic ointments help healing by keeping out infection and by keeping the wound clean and moist. However unless you are shaving in a war zone or suspect environment antibiotic use is overkill and invites the topic of antibiotic resistance, antimicrobial resistance which are becoming a major medical concern.

The products don't make the wound heal faster, but they can discourage infection and allow your body's healing process to close the wound more efficiently. Certain ingredients in some ointments can cause a mild rash in some people. If a rash appears, stop using the ointment.

Calendula, aloe Vera direct from the plant? Dragon’s blood? What are your favourite options to replace or augment the white styptic pencil paste?

I don't have an alum block or a styptic pencil. Anything which bleeds at all gets dabbed with tissue until it stops. A little direct pressure goes a long way. Mostly I just rinse with very cold water and apply a 10% alcohol AS for antiseptic properties. Both act as skin astringents and close blood vessels without having to jam particles in the wound. If I accidentally slip a jugular open or something I'd probably use my shaving towel until either help arrived or I bled out completely.

It's been a while since I got anything other than a weeper. If the bleeding's very minor I don't even touch it (usually stops when I splash on some a/s). If it keeps on bleeding, a little styptic will take care of it. Haven't had anything more serious than that.

How do I deal with cuts?
Usually with big snotty tears, crying like a grade one kid with a skinned knee.

Styptic pen for anything that doesn't stop after a cold water rinse and post-shave alum. Only happened once. <knock wood>

Dang that was weak. Best I got atm though.

I've just moved on to ATG attempts and am getting some rookie cuts when I use my left hand.

Since heidelberg dueling scars have dropped out of fashion I'll have to fast track my dexterity improvement or deal with the cuts.

I don't have an alum block either. If I get a cut while shaving and still have to go another pass, I can go lengthwise over the cut (gently and with lots of lather!). I then wipe off any residual lather and apply aftershave and I like alcohol based aftershave. I then place a tiny wad of tissue paper over the cut while I dress and get ready. Before I leave the house, I remove the wad of tissue paper and the cut is usually unnoticable.

So far so good, no nicks (from shaving...), now if I could stop finding burrs on the stainless counters at work I'd be happy.

I don't have any "clotting agents" ether. If I get cut, I get cut, end of story. I'm not worried about little nicks. If I get a good one that requires medical attention, well I'll worry about that when it happens
