So maybe the GD wasn't as sharp as I thought.
I guess like everyone keeps telling me...
You just need to feel the difference to know.
To be fair to the people that sent my gold dollar, I tried my first-ever stropping session on it, when I shouldn't have even stropped it after it was sent to me as "shave ready" .
However.
There was a big difference, that even me with only my fifth shave today can feel.
Hard to put my finger on it, exactly. But yeah, it was a big difference. Also even the blade seems to be a better quality metal, and the fact that it doesn't have near paper thin flimsy scales doesn't hurt.
I definitely noticed that difference in sharpness when I went to take my first left hand stroke after finishing the right cheek with my right hand.
Try to line it up perfectly with the bottom of my side-burn, and Bam! Wasn't watching my angle and got a nice bite. Kept looking for blood and was sure I should be seeing it but didn't. Couple minutes later I saw a nice little one inch red line perfectly lined up with my side-burn.
If I had this razor for the first four shaves, I may not have ever gotten to the chin, and mustache like I was with the other one.
Muchas gracias to Rodb for getting my first real edge here REALLY QUICKLY, and thanks to my assistant Isabella for helping me whip up some shaving cream, and firing off questions, and comments until I broke in the razor with first blood.
Gotta love emLast edited by Jwtruth45; 06-06-2017 at 01:28 AM.

Thanked: 3795Isabella looks like a great helper!
Here is the dirty secret about Gold Dollars…
Yes, they DO shave. They shave pretty OK. They are cheap razors with poor heat treating and grinding but yes, they do shave. If you like Harbor Freight tools and are OK with just okay tools that need to be corrected and at best will work okay, then a gd might be just right for you. On the other hand, if you would like a better tool that works better and lasts longer, then buy a better razor.
Oh, and congrats on the better razor!

I don't believe you just tossed Harbor Freight & Gold Dollar into the same taxi.

That kind of hits it on the head I think. I have a few things from Harbor Freight, for those unimportant jobs, or at least ones it might be better to have disposable tools.
Then I have my real tools.
I don't know if it was me or what, but I noticed after my 4th shave yesterday there were a few whiskers that I was surprised were missed. It was just some random one's, and thought maybe it was me?
After using the other one today I'm not so sure. I didn't miss any hairs where I went over.
I'm already worried about my possible addiction with these things, as I ordered another from a different Sr. member the day after I purchased this one LOL.
I did, however, stop myself (barely) from buying a third one in 3 days. So at least in the beginning I've kept it under control. I think?
Can't stop thinking of what the perfect razor for me will look like.....
Yes, she is a great helper, as long as you have a ton of energy to keep up!
She gets the hyper spaz energy from her Dad though so she can't wear me down like the others.Last edited by Jwtruth45; 06-06-2017 at 01:50 AM.

Thanked: 3795You have a beautiful daughter, and apparently other kids, and they are going to need all (most) of your money, so you need to be careful with that addiction!
FYI, there is no perfect razor. There only are razors that you do not have.

Thank you so much!
She already costs me quite a bit.
The classified section here is very dangerous for me to browse.
I'm doing this right now, and things are really tight. I can't imagine when things loosen up here in a bit. I need to be very careful.
The worst part is, I love the ones the most that will probably fillet my face in a heartbeat. I love the whole Barber's Notch I think you call it, and French tip, or Square.
This new razor today did help me calm down. I learned why I was blazing through areas of my face.
I still really look forward to learning, and staying with this but today gave me some nice, sobering perspective.Mark ~

Thanked: 4827I rarely respond to threads with GD in the banner, in fact I rarely read them. There are too many heated discussions about them. However I'm glad I read your thread. Keep learning. You may find distractions are best avoided. sometimes it is less distracting if they help as opposed to standing outside the door asking if you are done yet. Nicks and cuts happen. I just accept them when they happen and hope to avoid them.

Thanked: 433Glad you like the razor!! It took a major edge for sure.
Don't give up on the GD, I use mine maybe once a week with an edge nearly as nice as the one you bought. If you get a good one it will be just fine, there's the issue, they aren't very consistent from razor to razor.
