Hello!
Hello!
I'm new to the forum and even to the world of straight razors. Heck, I didn't even know people still did this! After seeing an article on digg.com about DE shaving, and following the rabbit hole, I ended up here, and I gotta say....I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna get into straight razor shaving.
I don't fear nicks or cuts or bad shaves. I'll get past that. Ya know what I fear? My insatiable collector mentality. Financially, any hobby I've ever had that I collect stuff for tends to spiral out of control for a bit. I'll eventually reign it in, but not after I spend too much money on it.
I could definitely see myself doing that now. Heck, I'm already looking at spending $160 on my first razor! And you don't have to tell me "Oh, you don't have to spend that much on your first!" I know that. I want to. If I'm gonna do something, I'm not gonna do it half-way from the start.
Oh well. I'm really excited, and I haven't even bought my first razor yet! I can't wait to get into this hobby. Any pointers you guys might be able to offer a newbie on where to buy razors is welcome. I'm looking very favorably at vintagebladesllc.com or whatever it is (my work has it blocked for "Weapons", so I can't get there).
I'm also highly interested in those newbie kits I've heard of around here. Just waitin' for them to surface......

Yeh. That's one of the reasons I wanted to work with vintageblades...for $20 I can just add the sharpening to my cart and be done with it. I'm definitely going to do that.
I just have to order from home, since my office blocks the site.

Thanked: 44Welcome. Looks like you will fit in well here. I have over 200 razors now and counting, 6 brushes, a million soaps, creams, colognes, aftershaves and so on and I am not bad compared to some here. You will get on well for sure. Look for a vintage razor. They can't be beat.

Yup, Topher (the previous poster) is actually trying to get starter kits together as we speak!
Well worth the wait and expense. Best bang-for-buck and he's planning 1st rate items. He may be able to find a style of razor that would fit your personal taste if you decide to do it vice ordering from vintageblades.
That is, in no-way, a slight against vintageblades- they have excellent offerings that can (and SHOULD) be honed prior to your receiving it. It's just another option.
Welcome!

Thanked: 44Vintage blades has great stuff and I am getting the brushes from Jim over there. Anything you get there will be awesome. His razors are honed by Lynn if you get that option and he has my favorite creams. If you want to get going right now go there and get one of his kits with a new razor. I would go for a mid level kit since you seem to like better stuff. Or get your razor there if you want a new one and some after shave from any of the makers he has, they are all good, some soap from mama bear and some after shave, some soap from The Gentlemans Quarter, a strop from Tony Miller at the Well Shaved Gentleman and so on. If you want a newby kit that is with a vintage razor then I will make one for you and will be taking orders. I can do whatever you want if it comes from those guys.
