Thanked: 0Alum block help
Do I wet this thing before its used? Do I dry it afterwards if I do wet it?

never used one myself but I was told to go at it dry. It's also used as a natural deodorant so I'd assume that supports the dry concept.

here's what I do
I personally run the end under some warm water for pre shave and post shave i run it under cool water. I am new as well but it was worked woners particularly post shave. After using it post shave I rinse it off and can then use aftershave if I desire. Really the alum block works well for finishing off a shave and killing razoe burn if you slip up. Also I typically dry it off afterwards.

Thanked: 0THanks, I actually just shaved with a crappy disposable razor, but I tried the alum block for the first time.
I washed my face and left my face a little moist and rubbed the block on, then I shaved as normal and afterwards I rinsed my face with cold water and then rubbed the block on my moist face again.
Man, it felt good!
Do you guys just leave the salty residue on your face though? I applied a post shave lotion, but I can still taste saltiness around my lips.
Either way, I love the feeling, and I hope it helps with my minor whitehead/ingrown hair/irritation problem that I get on my chin sometimes.
I have yet to use a straight razor, but I do have one in the mail coming to me! As of right now it has been sent to Lynn, so I look forward to seeing it in the near future.

Thanked: 2After I finish shaving, I rinse my face in warm water to remove any remaining soap residue, then put the alum block under cold running water, rub the block over my shaved face and neck. After that, I go about cleaning the brush and scuttle etc etc. then rinse my face/neck in cool water (removing the alum block residue, towel dry) Splash on a little Pinard classic and done. I let the alum block air dry naturally.
Good Luck

I use my alum block post shave. I rinse my face with cold water, leave moist, then run the block over the shaved area. I haven't had any problems with residue but re-rinsing sounds like a good idea. I leave mine air dry.

I would like to try an alum block as well. Do you guys find that this helps with ingrown hairs?

Others have had great success with it. I will swear to the alum block post shave for curing the razor burn. I have a few sensitive neck patchs and at the end of the shave they are a little irritated. I use the alum block and they don't stay irritated. Search for the the thread "Alum Block= magic" for some more info...

Nope not dry. its a salt rock. You need to dampen it to dissolve some of the salt and deposit it on you.
I use mine as an aftershave and deodorant. I apply it by running the top of the block under the tap then rubbing it on. As a deodorant you want to leave the residue there as thats what does the work throughout the day. As an aftershave you can leave the residue, or rinse it off after it has tightened the pores.
When I am done with the rock I set it on a soap tray to dry in the open air. It should never be stored wet as it will continue to dissolve until the solution is saturated and the rock is ruined.
