Thread: Straight Razors from Antique Shop and Questions

Well I went today and bought four that were inexpensive between 5-12 I also grabbed a strop for 3.50 just because. One (the cheapest is a no name but has horn scales but has been honed pretty severely another has bone scales (one is damaged) and says Claus 8002 Fremont. O. it has a nice fat V shape to it, another has black scales uncertain which material It says Shorty on one side and Howig - Robinson Des Moines, Ia Made in Germany. The final has Ivory colored scales One side says Harrington's Pet the Other side says Milwaukee Barber Supply Co. MI Germany. The Strop is a Valet Auto strop. There are Three or four others but they were 22, 25,35and 45 respectively so I thought I'd ask about them before dropping the money. I like two of them very much but it'll cost me 60 for both. I'll include photo's below of all of them including other random Shaving related items from the Antique store there was quite a bit. The 45.00 razor said Ladwigs Vanadium and Blue Steel on it .The 35.00 one I liked is in a Wustof Box is very clean and says H Boker Co. and has the word Splendid etched in large letters on the blade it is Made in Germany Solingen. The 25.00 one is CF Schwartz 84, Hamburg One for 22.00 is pitted and says schwetzer solingen I can't read the first three letters but says ???ASO on the side of the blade. This one I liked it had decorative scales one side said Lewis and Clark, the other side said Lewis Stenge Portland Or it was 22.00. Thanks if you made it through this long post, I'd like to go back tomorrow if any of the razors I mentioned are very good deals or exceptional blades. Also if anything jumps out as collectible in my images please let me know.. Thanks again, Mike

Hi, I think you can do better. All of them have significant wear. You would do much better to invest in a shave ready in the B/S/T forum. All these will need restoration and you would far exceed what you can get one ready to go from here.

Wholeheartedly agree w/ Ken. Get something worth having right off the bat. Nothing worse than taking the headlong plunge into disappointment. Get something from one of our members and you will get affordable quality from people who care enough to back what they sell. God bless you and welcome to SRP. We're all friends.

+1 By far the best advice you could have recieved...Short cuts won't work when starting out. Welcome aboard, plenty of room on this bus that leads to the dreaded disease known as RAD.....

I can't judge the quality, but from the looks of them I think some of them are quite nice looking, although all of them would seem to require a significant amount of work to buff up.

As for shaving with them, well, they'd need to be honed (preferrably by one of the resident honemeisters). Other than that I yield to the expertise.
