    Pastes are optional-- you can also use a barber's hone or a coticule (or other high grit/finishing type hone). I've never used pastes.

    That hone is too coarse for your upkeep needs.

    Hanging strops are more comfortable for use on a daily basis for about 90% of straight users so you might want to get a nice hanging strop and keep the paddle for some 0.5µ paste as a touch up tool.
