Ah, well here in Canuckistan, (Canada) we LOVE our hockey. It's a religion really.

Les Canadiens de Montréal (or Montreal Canadiens) refers to when the French first arrived in Canada. They were called Les Canadiens, which is quite different from being 'Canadian' as we are now. This was before the English arrived and beat the French in a famous battle.. Les Canadiens refers to these french colonists pre English arrival.

Which brings me to Habs. Habs is short for Les Habitants. Which means 'the habitants of Canada, the newly found land'. Again, referring to Canada, pre English arrival.

    Go Habs Go!

A Hab is another name for the Montreal Canadiens (NHL) team.

From the web: Habs is an abbreviation of "les habitants," the informal name given to the original settlers of New France, dating back to the 17th Century. So it's a natural fit for the The Montreal Canadiens, established in 1909 and marketed as a French-Canadian hockey team.

The nickname might have been the result of an error. According to NHL.com, the first man to refer to the team as "the Habs" was Tex Rickard, owner of Madison Square Garden, in 1924. Rickard apparently told a reporter that the "H" on the Canadiens' sweaters was for "Habitants." Not true. The distinctive C-wrapped-around-H logo stands for "Club de Hockey Canadien."

It is beginning to make sense to me. I have heard of some hockey teams.Like Vancouver Canucks, The (Pittsburgh?) Penguins and there is a Ducks team I think. I know there was a mighty ducks film but that may or may not be related.

EDIT: Oh, is a 'Leaf' a Toronto Fan? They have a Maple leaf symbol dont they?

Yup, you are correct - Toronto Maple Leafs (who have yet to win the cup in my lifetime .... this is the year! or maybe next .... or the one after .... ). WRT the Ducks, first came the Disney movie, then the hockey team.

Leafs fans are some of the most dedicated fans around. You gotta be with the years of disappointment they have had to put up with!

One of the best rivalries around is Leafs vs Habs. Although, I think English Habs fans hate the Leafs more then French fans.. French speaking Habs fans hate the Bruins (Boston) more.

Anyhow, to bring this back on topic, just finished a shave and I sliced myself again! Not as bad as the last. But this opposite from dominate side (for me the right) is not easy at all.

I got the left side down pretty good. It's the other side that's tough..

Being a Leafs fan sounds like being a Leighton Orient fan, or as they are locally known 'Leighton-Orient-Nil'. The team is so bad that there was a period of 2 years (Oct 93-Sept 95) during which they didnt win a single away game. This saw them drop two divisions.

I am sorry to hear about your most recent injury. Truly, we suffer for our art.

But is Leighton Orient flush with cash ? You see the Leafs are the richest team in the entire league. While Toronto's population pales in comparison to New York, their fans are so rabid, so devoted that they still pull in more revenues then the Rangers (New York). It doesn't matter how much the Leafs suck, and for how long, they keep coming back!

If you want a season's pass for the Leafs, you have to pay $35,000 (CDN, 31K USD) just to get the right to pay $210 per seat for the actual ticket!

And they are all sold out for years..

This is what makes the Leafs so incredible. They suck SO bad and yet people keep coming back for more! Ok, ok, I'm embellishing.

BTW, the owner of the Habs, George Gillette is also co-owner of New Castle United.. But we here in Montreal like George.. As opposed to say New Castle where they apparently want him dead!
