    Default New guy aboard.

Howdy to all! I have posted a couple times already, but thought it time for an intro. I just started using a straight razor (a Dovo 5/8" classic black), and on my 4th shave I was able to get a better shave than my safety razor ever gave. I've also yet to draw as much blood as I have with my safety razor! I am a Captain with a major U.S. airline, so I have to limit my straight shaving to my days off. As Floor Pizza, a fellow airline pilot said, the TSA might have a problem with us taking a straight razor through security! I've started applying some of the techniques I've learned for straight shaving to shaving with a safety razor, and have brought that razor's effectiveness to a whole new level as well. I like the process as much as the great shave you get with a straight. I also like anything that is "old fashioned", as it seems the newer fangled methods of doing things are based on getting you hooked on a lifetime of supporting some company by having to buy their product till you die. I like buying a product that I could use my whole life, and then seriously hand down to my grandkids. It also seems the old ways of doing things just work better. I have the same philosophy for airplanes too. I'd still be flying my beloved 727 (no stinking computers anywhere in that aircraft!) were it not for them having been unceremoniously sent to the desert after 9/11.

I must thank this forum and all those who post here for saving me from getting really discouraged. I foolishly purchased some JUNK razors on ebay, and thankfully found this forum soon after. I've really learned alot already from y'all, and appreciate the great discussions and help found here!! The next thing for me to do is get started on my SHAVE DEN! MUAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

    Shave on....

Good to see you're still around!

It really is interesting how a few shaves with a straight will improve your skills with a DE. Same thing happened to me. A DE-only shave to baby butt smooth levels takes all of ten minutes now. Now if I could just figure out how to pull off a decent flaps 40 landing, I'd be set!

I agree. It's getting so that my straight is giving me a better shave than my safety ever did, with less effort. It used to be that my stubble would start returning within hours of my shave. Now it stays close nearly all day!

Easy...you just wrestle it down to where it looks survivable, yank the power off, and let gravity have it.

Thanks for the welcome guys! I'm really hating having to go to work, leaving my straight at home! Oh well, gotta do it.

Hey FloorPizza, my technique for those 40 flappers is the old 727 "check and roll" maneuver. Seems to work pretty well, but I agree it sure is tough to get a nice smooth touchdown consistently. Heck, if I'm doin a 40 flaps landing, I'm not too concerned with a BBS touchdown, but its always cool to pull it off anyway!

I just received my Norton 4000/8000 stone and have been working on my honing. It sure is satisfying when you actually notice improvement in your blade as a result of your labors. I still need lots of practice though. I really need to get another razor....
