Thread: Razor mistake

I thought the 'cutting' edge on them came permenantly ground flat?!

So, you are the" proud" owner of a Zeepk razor and you just found out that you cannot shave with it. The question now is: what are you going to do about it? You probably still want to shave with a straight, that is why you bought the Zeepk in the first place. And that probably means buying another razor but which one and where do I buy it from? A couple of suggestions here: Try a round point razor about 5/8 in width and middel of the roaad in hollow. New or used does not matter much as long as the razor is in good shaving condition. You may want to buy it shave ready to avoid honing it (this part is highly recommended). The classified section is a good place to start. There is aalso a lits of vendors here in the forum and some that sponsor it. Ovoid Ebay, at least, in your first purchases. Ah, you also need a strop and maybe a brush and some soap.

Welcome to SRP. Sorry to hear about your bad Zeepk experience. These things happen to us all. I bought my first str8 about 3 yrs ago, along with a strop and hone (I've been using a badger brush for yrs). The razor wasn't shaveready and the hone was no help. The str8 was the sharpest thing I'd ever seen and I gave it a shave. Miserable! It pulled more hair than it cut and gave me a horrible burn. I had to let my face heal for a week before I tried it again. I stuck with my disposable and occasionally tried the str8, always with terrible results. The hone didn't help.

Then I found SRP. I bought Lynn's DVD (highly recommended) and read everything I could find here. I decided to buy a shaveready Dovo from CS (good excuse for another str8). I was pleasantly surprised by my new razor. Now I know how a shaveready str8 should feel. I use my Dovo daily now and it's better than any other razor I've owned.

Str8 shaving is a skill that must be learned. The guys here at SRP will be there to help you along. There are some wonderful shaveready str8s in the classifieds for $50 or less. Straight Razor Designs has Lynn's DVD on sale for $15.

It's benn a while since I been to the sight so thanks for the response. Question though. I understand from everyone and I MEAN EVERYONE that the zeepe is terrible, however it is metal and can't carbon steel be sharpened for at least one shave. I am not defending anything just curious as to reasoning this particular steel can't be sharpened?

the answer is still no
in principle you are right it can be sharpened to even atomic width. but that's not enough for a shave. the edge needs to stay sharp after cutting hair and for that you need good steel that is properly heat treated.

if the zee is anything like a tomahawk, Yes You can get it to shave sharp, But here is the kicker. Half way thu the shave it will dull. It will loss it's edge really fast. Now to get that shaving sharp edge You will hone it so much that you will wear it way down. Use it for show or what I'm doing with my tomahawk, Use it as a knife. That is the steel they used to make it from anyway.


For shaving, NOT GOOD Even for cutting your worst friends neck.

My understanding is that some honemeisters in this forum have tried and failed to put a suitable edge on a Zeepk. Paco, it comes down to the hardness of the steel. This definitely not the best example but imagine trying to make a cutting surface out of butter, clearly you cannot. Even if you could get it thin enough, once the edge touches something (your face), it would melt. Just a couple of days ago, I asked a similar question to L. R. Harner: Is it possible to heat treat a Zeepk to make it harder? The answer was: no!. There is not enough carbon in the steel to make it hard enough for a razor. Also, because the razor is very thin already, it would probably crack when you heat it anyway. He suggested remelting it but that defeats the purpose... ;-)Also Kenrup posted that Zeepk razors are made with recycled steel. I am not sure how that affects the hardness or the quality of the steel.

I had the zeepk experience also... it will get KIND OF sharp, but it doesn't even last for two strokes... not worth the trouble..
