Many get along fine with a 4/8 and a strop. A 12k or higher for polishing is an option as is chrom ox or diamond paste. I have proved to myself at Randy's suggestion that I can get a fine shave off of a 4/8.
On newer razors in good condition I would say that would be fine. Chipped edges and dull razors would be quicker to set a bevel on with a 1k or a 1200 diamond plate. Depends on what you want and what you need. The Wiki has a lot on this topic and is worth a look.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
