Dang, it's good to be back!

Try stropping it a lot. Unfortunately, I don't think it bodes well that the edge doesn't even catch your hair. I hate to say it, but there are a lot of "knife guys" out there that use straights, but treat them like their knives. It's simply a different animal. If stropping doesn't make it better, check this list of honemeisters out for someone that for sure knows what they're doing: Member Services - Straight Razor Place Classifieds

It was a simple polishing wheel. Like the ones you see on a bench grinder. Left the rubbery melted residue on the top of the blade.

That's an interesting method! Now we've established it doesn't work for razors at least you can get something done about it. I'd imagine it'll need re-honing after that kind of abuse. I'd contact the nearest reputable honemiester you can find on here.

na he is a knife guy, and a good one too. No need to be hating on him. Especially since he didn't charge me for anything. And gave me a bunch of stuff to take care of the blade as far as rust protection.
Although you are probably right this isn't his area of expertise.

That's a nice attitude. No harm done in the long run, i hope, so what does it matter. Hope you get it to a shave ready standard very soon, by which time the strop will have arrived. Which one did you go for?

The IL 827 from the knife center. Should be good to start out with. Plus I'm paying for a new tranny in my wife's mazda. So I didn't have a lot of $$ to throw around.
