Thanked: 0new razor question
Hi, just wondering if someone can help me out. I just bought a brand new dovo straight razor from a knife store, along with a two sided strop. The guy who sold it to me said that it is pre sharpened and ready to go. I just shaved with it and it is definitely NOT sharp enough yet because it was very graby and hard to shave with. It cuts the skin on my caluses very easily, so thats how sharp it is right now. My question is will I be able to get it sharp enough with the strop, or does it have to be honed first?

It will need honing, just stropping will not be enough.
You can find reliable, professional razor honers listed in the Classifieds. I highly recommend sending it out for at least the first honing, that way you will know you have a sharp razor to learn with.
Do not take it to a knife sharpening shop. Very few othem know what a straight razor is, or how to sharpen it for shaving.

Welcome to SRP! One of two things are wrong either your technique or your razor, probably both, but youcant improve your technique with a razor that wont shave. Although the razor is sharp its probably not shaving sharp, it needs to be honed.PM sent.
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

Well, it has been said above but just in case you are not convinced yet, get your razor sharpened by one of our honemeisters. When you get it back, make sure you review the threads on stropping before taking your razor to a strop. It is easy to ruin the edge on a piece of leather believe it or not.

When you get it back make sure you save it for shaving. Future callous removal may cause damage to the edge!
