Default Reasons to use a straight

    anything to add:

    1) Being able to beat what is precieved by me to be a hard job into submission
    2) Holding a substantial tool in my hand, no pride in those disposables
    3) Nothin more ever needed once I have my hardware
    4) Nothing gets discarded ever
    5) Baby but smooth shave, nothing else can come anywhere near this
    6) A tool that has been around since the dawn of time
    7) Traveling - easy to find new or replacement hardware if needed
Traveled in central america, drugstores had some dovos on shelves
    8) Practicing a centuries old tradition

I can see that the women must love the idea that you shave with the straight, some precive it to be very manly. My wife however, thinks that I am trying to lop my neck off with the thing, but she loves the results so she can't really argue.

To paraphrase a joke bumper sticker a friend made on tattoos, "Because people who shave with a straight razor are cool and they can kick your a$$."
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    10) Taking time for yourself and getting into the zen of the shave.

for me it is a challenge that is very rewarding mentally and comfort wise.
when i hone a razor and then shave with it and it works great and i hit the right combo of angles (i am still testing and trying new things) it is a great feeling. when i sit down and think about it, i realize it is just shaving, but for some reason it is satisfying for me. my dad doesn't get it at all and wants quick and decently close, which he gets with his Gillette Fatboy. no one really watches me shave so i can't say it makes me look badass, my g/f sees me but is used to it now. she really like how smooth my face is but doesn't really care which way i do it, as long as i am happy.

so for me it is a mentally relaxing activity like meditation that centers and grounds me. other then that the reason are pretty minor (ie thrill of buying something new, first shave thrill, etc)

As someone just starting to use a straight, the idea of developing a skill that has widely been lost by modern men is a driving factor behind my decision.

That being said, the effort wouldn't be worth it if I didn't feel like I would get a superior shave once I've developed the skill.

And of course, it is bad ass!
