I think the main problem is to find the right razor. Mind you, I would miss all my other razors, but I could easily live with just one (6/8ths Le Grelot 1/4 hollow in case anyone wants to know...). But I had to go through various widths and grinds to find that out.

You need one more razor than you already have, re-evaluate tomorrow and you will get the same results!

I agree with this. One would be enough if there was no downtime for resharpening or repairing

I would image the only thing that I would purchase now would be a strop, don't have one as yet as I am leaving that to the future once I can learn to shave with the straight first - one step at a time.
What if your kid prefers carbon steel?

You do need a strop of some sort to use before every shave, so put that on top of your short list.

As for the OP, I'd agree that two is the minimum.

i like my timor but i just got my red imp so i've only had one shave with it. don't have a thies-issy yet so i have no clue whether or not i'd like them...
and there's the problem, you end up with several (dozen) before you find the one you can't do without.
but i will say this, i do like carbon over stainless over all, the timor is just really lightweight compared to my dovo. and that reminds me, eventually, i'll have a zowada. and i want a japanese style straight just for the experience of using one (i hope you see where this is going)

Fortunately for me I have approximatly ten years to go before I need to teach my son this task. I have years to learn and experiment and get it right myself before I have to show him what I learned. I understand what jfreashsho is telling us. Fortunately I have one carbon and one stainless razor, he can have his pick as soon as he understands the difference between the two.

I got by for fifteen years with only one razor just fine. After finding this site, I now have six. I will probably get one more so I can round it out for a one week set. After that I will start to recycle. I will get another but I will also get rid of one thus mainting the status quo of seven.
