Thanked: 1Greetings to all!
Greetings all!
So I have been lurking here for what seems an eternity. Reading all I can about straights these past few months. I have a DE that I have been using for a few years now. I mentioned to a friend how great DE was and how much I now enjoy shaving. When I said I am thinking of getting a straight, he asked how close the emergency room was and if I had health coverage.
I must say that I am both humbled and thankful for all those who post here. I have learned such an incredible amount and look forward to now actually participating!
As for my first acquisition, I am leaning towards a round 5/8, and also a strop.

Thanked: 1195Welcome to SRP, Miloh. I was a long time lurker too, so I don't have to tell you that the folks around here know all there is to know about straight razors. Good choice on the beginner razor size/tip. As for the strop, myself and others here will tell you that Tony Miller's strops are the way to go, but I think Illinois and Dovo make some very reputable strops as well. Happy shaving....

Welcome, My first purchase was a Dovo 5/8ths. I think you'll like it. Where are you in New England. I used to live in Norwich Ct. I was stationed at the Sub Base in Groton....Rich

Hello and welcome!
Nearest emergency room? It's reputation like that that keeps more people from trying the straight! As long as you respect the blade, it respects you.
My first razor was also a dovo 5/8", served me well. I have an Illinois strop, but a Dovo one will serve you well also. If you want to treat yourself, get a Tony Miller Strop, I wish I had when I started and still want one....Haven't found an excuse to splurge on one yet!
You're off to a great start by reading a lot of information here. Check out the wiki too, if you haven't already done so.
Let us know how everything goes!

+1 what Dave said. You can't go wrong with Tony Millers strops. I have several and I've never been disappointed. He's also a great guy to talk to, very helpful....Rich

Thanked: 1Welcome, I was a lurker for awhile as well. just getting into this as well. I was stationed in Maine for a bit. then just left Jax since I am out.
Hey Dave, you could always sell a strop, then it would be an excuse to get a new one.

Thanked: 1Thank you for the warm welcome and advice
I actually have been eyeing the 5/8 Dovo. But another part of me wants a used presharpened razor. Something about getting a straight razor with a "personality" or history behind it appeals to me. I know, I am a bit weird lol. Whatever I get, from the research I have done here - I definitely want it to be honed and absolutely ready to shave.
@zib I actually hail from good ole New Haven, CT. I have been to the Groton sub base many a time with the scouts and for field trips. Awesome place!
