Thread: Which razor for a beginner?

I would go with the Bismark, I have that one and I love how it shaves, and how it feels in my hand it is very comfortable. I did buy it already professional sharpened from Straight Razor Designs so that helped to give a starting point for how a shave ready razor should feel . When I ordered it they were great at getting it to me in a couple of days very good service.

Both are fine shavers, I tend to like a larger blade, 6/8th's. I like my Bismarck, I think they come in 6/8th's?
Nice scales too, the red with the pearlex inlay, gold etching on the spine.
Really classy looking razor, holds and takes an edge.

Since there is no such thing as a "beginners" razor, I would recommend looking into 5/8 or a 6/8 round point. I prefer a 6/8. But a 6/8 doesn't maneuver quite as well as 5/8. Physics. A 5/8 makes it a bit easier to work those tight areas. A 6/8 works there too, but requires a bit more work. Also, you can learn with a spike point. Many of our mambers have. But, a round poiont is a bit more forgiving for the beginner.

Also, have you considered the classifieds? There you will find very nice razors which are truly shave ready, and at a reasonable price. Those are not throw away razors. Our members have reputations to keep. Also, in the Vendor's Corner you will find a few vendors who sell starter sets.

If you haven't already done so you should get a copy of Lynn's CD. It contains over 3 hours of straight razor information. It is a good investment.

I must agree with those recommending the Bismarck. I bought myself one as a beginner, and though lately I've been in DE-land, its a great buy. Well made, good looking and solid.

Have you considered the Red Bismark you can get it in 6/8 and the point is a little more round. Vintage blades has them both, for the same price I believe. Or if you must have white scales the Perlex is the same price and is round point. It comes in both sizes. As far as the point I have both and like both so I am not much help there. The round will be more forgiving to learn on. Oh and welcome to SRP it looks like you are going to get a good razor no matter which you select. Well good luck and enjoy.
