+1 Alraz it's the same way I do. 20 or so linen 50 or so leather pre shave, then I go about 20 just leather post. If your stroping method is good you can not over strop.

It varies by individual and strop. You strop till it's "done" for my Tony Miller linen/horsehide paddle it's closer to 80/50, but for my Craftsman hanger it's about 50/40, and for my Dovo hanger it's about 70/40.

You really can't overstrop, so don't be cautious with it. Just keep it pulled tight, and use a light touch.

Newb here so I don't know what this is worth but I really don't count. I just strop till it sounds right. Does this make sense?

With stropping it's probably better to count. 20-30 linen & 40-50 leather before. 10-20 after. I prefer linen for this. Honing is different, & counting is more of a guideline. You just hone it on each progression till it hit's it's peak for the individual stone. (Unless you're doing pyramids)

How does it sound when it's there?

Hardly at all. No light dragging sounds. It sounds like all the metal micro burs have aligned themsleves. I usually do around ten or so more passes after it gets to that point. I imagine it probably takes fifty plus passes to get to that point.
