Time?
I've been using a straight for about three weeks and I usually shave every other day. From first starting stroke to final problem area touch up is taking me from 30 to 45 minutes.
When did things start to "click" for you? Any suggestions? Thanks!I strop my razor with my eyes closed.

Sounds like the perfect amount of time.
I spend that much in the morning. Speed is not the thing for a piece of surgical steel flashing about your face. Enjoy yourself.

Well for me it took a few months for everything to "click", but that was mainly due to my stubborness is trying to hone my first razor to shave-readiness....Since I had my razors honed properly and learned how to hone myself, things have gone much smoother.
I would say that once I had a properly honed razor it took me at least a month to get comfortable shaves. I know it took me a while, and it was a slow road, but I really didn't want to give up.
With only 3 weeks in, I think you're definitely well on your way, but definitely have room to improve still. Hell, I'm about 8 months in and getting faster and better shaves still. Don't worry, take your time and enjoy the progress.
P.S. How was your razor honed?

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it.
Dave, my first razor I shaved with I bought from the classifieds here as shave ready. I stropped it and shaved with no problems. For me, stropping is a slow, deliberate job, no speed, yet. I want good form. My original razor, I sent to Lynn and Company for honing. That sucker is sharp with a capital S! I have two other razors that need honing. I have a Swaty, but haven't tried to use it.I strop my razor with my eyes closed.

For me it happened so gradually that I couldn't even tell that it had happened until I recorded my shave vid and looked at how long it now takes me. It's not about the time it takes. that's a good thing. Take that time. Be in that shaving moment. It's about enjoying the ride whether it's a 10 minute ride or a 50 minute ride. I've done it both ways and there's something to be appreciated about the longer shaves. enjoy them.

I am just now getting things to click for me, on probably a very minimal level, and it has been near 8 weeks of my start with straight razors. I just started getting smooth shaves on my chin and neck this week. And I just learned that I was stropping incorrectly the whole time.
It still takes me a half hour.

Thanked: 3795I allegedly have ADD and I just don't have the patience to take that long to shave. For me, I want to get it done and get on with my day. I enjoy using a razor that can get the job done quickly so lathering, stropping, and shaving takes 7 minutes, tops.

I have been using straights for about 8 months now and my shaves take 25-30 minutes. I just don't feel the need to rush so I take my time. It's not a race!
