That is an awesome story. I found the forum first and other web sites and then started shaving. I thought I was sick of twin/mach 5 blades, but you're story is something else. Very resourceful and I also would like to see your originals.

Will post pictures later when I get home, I'm at work at the moment and prefer to do that sort of thing from my laptop. In answer to TomSD's question. No I have'nt tried a manufactured blade yet though would like to just for a comparison, although I don't think the difference would be too great. Has I said earlier I'm getting results better than the twin blades I used before without all the burn and frustration of unclogging blades every few strokes. Plus and I don't know if this is supposed to happen, the shave lasts longer and the regrowth does'nt hurt either.
I can only see the shave getting better has I gain confidence and experience with the blade.

That is a pretty common experience. I've just started myself and after only a week or two I know I won't ever be going back, heh.

Welcome aboard Mark! Should I assume you built a car when it came time for you to start driving? All I can say is "Wow!" such enterprise to MAKE your own straight razor right off the bat.

Ahh the straight razor did'nt come right off the bat exactly, I've been making knives for a short while now and have done a bushcraft knife, a skinner, two bowies one small one large and a slip joint folder. Then one night someone put a link on the forum to this site and that was it. The seed was planted. It took about two weeks to finish the project I was on and then there was no stopping me. One six inch file, two hours grinding, about four hours polishing then a good couple of hours to sharpen, hone and strop (All by hand.) and there it was one straight edge razor. (Ishould mention at this stage both my fore arms and a potion of my stomach were completely bald.) The next night I dressed it in brass. It also took me atleast a week and half to get the nerve up to actually use it.

Right! You asked for it so here we go, This is the first I made, dressed in brass with a bone stop it is now more of a wedge than hollow ground as its the one I practised sharpening on, it will still give a good shave but is harder to keep a good edge on.

This is the fixed blade one and this one is scary sharp so much so I think your stubble jumps out when it sees it coming, its a real pleasure to use.
    .
    Hope you like.

Would love to but I do the grinding at work while the machine is running so I keep having to stop to see to that, plus it would be getting someone to hold the camera so I'm stuck really. This is something I really would like to do because the art of freehand grinding on an open wheel is a dying trade.
