Thanked: 5Hello
My name's Mark and I've just joined this evening. I've been using a straight edge for about a month now and am getting good results. The razors I'm using are both home made from files I rescued from the scrap at work and hand ground on the grinder to a nice hollow on both sides and then sharpened to a 1200 grit paper and honed on a slate then stropped on a strop I made from a strip of marked leather I had left over from making a sheath for a knife.. The first one I dressed in brass scales and although quite comfortable it felt a little awkward to start with so I decided to make the second a fixed blade in a small file handle I had in my tool box. Both work fine and the shave is 100 times better than the twin blades I used to use and without all the razor burn after.
Thanks for looking.

Welcome, Mark
Nothing like going rustic, eh? I'm not sure if you're aware, but there is a long history of people making razor right there in your home town.

Welcome to the SRP Mark!
Sounds like you've done some nice work. I'd love to see pictures of the razors you've crafted and know others would too. Have you ever shaved with a manufactured straight or just with your own design? I would think there would be a big difference based on the type of metal and whatnot but I am far from a professional in the field.

That is an awesome story. I found the forum first and other web sites and then started shaving. I thought I was sick of twin/mach 5 blades, but you're story is something else. Very resourceful and I also would like to see your originals.

Thanked: 5Will post pictures later when I get home, I'm at work at the moment and prefer to do that sort of thing from my laptop. In answer to TomSD's question. No I have'nt tried a manufactured blade yet though would like to just for a comparison, although I don't think the difference would be too great. Has I said earlier I'm getting results better than the twin blades I used before without all the burn and frustration of unclogging blades every few strokes. Plus and I don't know if this is supposed to happen, the shave lasts longer and the regrowth does'nt hurt either.
I can only see the shave getting better has I gain confidence and experience with the blade.
