Default chance to get a new guy into shaving!

    Hey guys,

what do you think, I tried to get my brother into the straight thing before, he didn't really take to it. I have a coworker, younger kid (21) who just came to me asking advice on how to get rid of the shadow he has. he uses a mach 3 and gel. can't go against the grain without getting irritation next day (on the chin). I talked to him, recommended wet shaving, at least the prep process. Told him he might want to start with a double then try a straight.

I love sharing addictions/vices. i am wondering if I should help him out a bit. I have razors, I could send one off to get honed and let him try it. I have a Tony miller practice strop, which is nicer than what I started with. I could probably get him a boar brush and some poraso or something for <20 ??

What do you guys think, help a guy out? create a monster? or start looking for a cheap double and let him start easy?

Go straight.... The learning curve is going to be there either way and he doesnt have to screw with disposable blades.

Agreed. I remember being all nervous and thinking I was going to hurt myself with a DE for the first few shaves. If I'm going to feel that way again with a straight...might as well skip the middle step.

Good on you for helping a kid out AND bringing over a convert!

I would vote for helping him out..

If you love sharing addictions this is a great opportunity to spread the straight shaving virus..

I vote for helping him out as well. I would probably let him use your razor and the strop, but the soap and brush might be a bit too much too quick. Let him try shaving with the gel first or maybe just suggest he use soap instead of the shaving gel the first time. That way you can get a feel for whether he likes it or not before getting the soap and brush.

At least he knows that he can come ask you questions anytime. I wish I had someone that could show me in real life how to do all this stuff I am trying to learn. Especially knowing what "shave ready" really means.

Yeah, I think I'll do that. I'll get one of my inexpensive ones honed (I had one in the car and should have thrown it in the box I sent out to Max today but was in a rush and forgot). and let him use that practice strop. I'll recommend he buy his own brush. all of this of course if he is interested.
