Thanked: 0Just Bought First Razor off Ebay
Hey guys,
I just bought my first straight razor and I was wondering if you all had any input about the razor. I read a few guides on how to buy a straight razor etc and this one seemed pretty decent.
here's the link
J. R. TORREY STRAIGHT RAZOR EX COND & COMES SHAVE READY - eBay (item 150339531228 end time May-01-09 17:15:00 PDT)
What do you guys think?

Thanked: 1903Welcome to SRP, Salzary,
Nice razor for a decent price. If it really is shave ready, you did rather well.
Regards,

Thanked: 171If it does in fact come shave ready, you did pretty well, IMO. If it's only close, but not quite shave ready, then you're in for another ~$20 to get her honed up properly by a honemeister here.
I've not personally dealt with that seller, so I don't know how "shave ready" his blades actually are or not? It would seem from his description that he knows a bit about razors, at least, so I would personally have at least some confidence that it is at some level of "shave ready." I would have rather seen you purchase a razor from the classifieds here, to be more sure that you are getting a razor that is truly shave ready, but chances are that this one will work out for you anyway.
It's always tough when a newbie buys a razor from an unknown source and then has problems shaving with it. Over the internet, it's difficult to be certain if it's the razor causing problems, or the user (technique).
Hopefully the seller is a member here and will chime in, or maybe someone who has bought some of his blades can chime in as to whether or not they found them to be shave ready?
Either way, Welcome!! It certainly is a nice looking blade for a good price, truly shave ready or not.

Thanked: 0I didn't think to search the seller's name on this forum but it turns out that he used to be a pretty active member here. I think his name here was Bob Keyes, and from what I can tell from the posts on this forum, his razors were "shave ready." Guess I lucked out. Can't wait to give this a try.
Thanks guys

Shave ready ? Are you kidding ? Have no fear , that razor will be clean , and shave ready . Altima55 is the real deal . You got lucky getting one of his razors , that cheap . I've bought 3 razors from him over the past 2 years , and they all were/are great ! Clean the oil off the blade and strop it , and you'll be ready to shave .
Greetings , from Dundalk , Maryland . The place where normal people , fear to go .

Thanked: 3795I haven't spent much time on ebay lately but I have never seen one of Bob's razors go so cheaply. You lucked out in three ways.
1. Torreys are great shavers. They have excellent steel. This one is more special because it's a round point, which is fairly rare for Torreys in my opinion, and round points are great for beginners.
2. Bob does full refurbishing of razors. He takes them apart and cleans them completely and then repins them. Collectors might not like that the original pins have been replaced but it ensures you have a completely clean and fully functional razor. He knows how to make them sharp.
3. You paid $34 for a great razor in pristine condition and it's already shave ready. Most people charge $20 for honing and most ebay razors desperately need honing. If you subtract the honing cost, you bought yourself a great razor for $14.
You got a phenomenal deal!!!!Last edited by Utopian; 05-05-2009 at 12:00 AM.

beginners luck? maybe yes maybe no but as everyone has said you have a great razor at a great price from a seller with an ironclad reputation. You couldn't have done better.
