Thanked: 0My new razor...
Hello all,
I am new to the forums and new to the world of straight shaving. I just purchased my first razor today on eBay, and won't be getting it in for a few days, but I was wondering what you experienced shavers think. I paid about $22 for it. I fell in love with it first sight, and now I know I'll be starting a collection. I was just wondering if I got close to my money's worth. Also, it says that it is "shave ready", but I would like to take every step to ensure this is correct...any suggestions for care/etc.?
Details from listing:
Clauss Fremont O Straight Razor - Nice Rosewood Handle! In "The Black Diamond Razor" Box. 6" long (closed), GREAT condition for its age! The wood is quite beautiful and the blade is ready to shave! Markings: Clauss Fremont O. USA.
BTW: I did a little research on the Clauss razors, and I haven't been able to find any info on models with Rosewood Handles, can anyone shed light as to why it seems so hard to find them online?
Thanks!
ZFrankie.

Clauss are good razors, and from the looks of it $22 ain’t bad at all. I’m not sure if the scales (handles) are original as they look too long but with some cleaning and honing you should have a very serviceable razor on hand…

Thanked: 0Thanks, scales...that was the word I had been searching for haha. So if those aren't the original scales, I'm guessing that this razor's value would be brought down?

you could even add nicer scales down the road and increase the value

Thanked: 0Yeah, I wasn't sure which section it would be more appropriate to post, newbies corner or razors. Sorry for the mix up!

Thanked: 13245The good news first...
Clauss razors are very good shavers....
The bad news second...
If that is really wood then it is a restore, if it is a restore then somebody went way too long on the length of the scales....
If those are the original scales they are most likely Rosewood looking Celluliod...
If these are original then the blade has been shortened sometime in it's life....
Most likely scenario just guessing from the pics,, which is never all that acurate... These are not original scales and were put on the razor which is why they don't fit...
Also I love that question, after the fact, "I paid $$$ for this razor did I get a good deal" ....
ps:
Just looking at the pics I would seriously doubt the razor is shave ready, I am looking for a shine at the edge and I am not seeing it, you will know for sure when you try it out....Last edited by gssixgun; 07-01-2009 at 10:44 PM.

Thanked: 0Any other opinions on the blade, or this razor as a whole? Oh, and does anyone know approximately how old this might be? Thanks in advance!

Thanked: 4942I believe you are correct Glen. I just re-did one of these a few weeks back. They are indeed good shavers and this one looks like it should clean up fine.

Thanked: 0Would the longer scales/shorter blade setup make it harder to grasp and shave with, or would that not be a concern?
