    Default New to straights

    Hey there, newbie checking in.

I've always been fascinated with straight razors and their simple form and effective function.

I've recently ordered this antique short blade straight razor.
Not sure of the brand name, as it is stamped Maw , son & Sons.

    Size info from seller:

    Overall blade is 4 ''.. Actual shaving area is 2 1/4 ''
    Fully extended 7 '' long , Folded 4 1/2 ''

Since you are new to straight shaving, you may want to give it to an experienced honer and ask for them to evaluate it and see if they can get it into shaving condition and/or some tips on restoring it. Checking out who is offering honing services on SRP and get in touch with them.

Thanks for sharing the photo of it and have fun! SRP is a great resourse for you.

As long as there is no damage to the edge, it should be able to be made into an adequate shaver, but it is highly unlikely that it will work without honing it first. If you're interested in a free honing, you can check out my signature line and/or send me a PM.

The partial name doesn't ring any bells for me. Maybe someone else will come up with it though.

My brother told me to watch out for rust and tetanus, don't know if that is a major concern here.

Something he doesn't have to worry about with his 200 dollar Solingen.

PS - Thanks for the offer Utopian, I will consider it when it arrives.

Rust is a concern, but that one looks free of it to me, at least on the side we can see.

It looks good - I would strongly recommend you take up Utopians offer because you won't get a better one any time soon!

+1 on taking up Utopian on his offer. He will hone it up to a great edge and send very detailed notes on the condition of the entire razor (edge, scales, pins, and all).

Also one guy that seems to know alot about the names and origin of razors is Manah. He helped me with finding the maker of a razor i picked up on ebay for restoration.

I think it is this company.
    S.Maw & Co., London existed 1807-1901.
And so, it is old English company. This is already good.=)

Unfortunately that was a bid that I lost. However, I will continue to peruse eBay for oldie vintage blades.

The other night I purchased a Master USA $10 blade. Fooled by the price. I quickly requested the seller to refund my purchase, which he did.

The item apparently still shipped and the seller said "if it arrives, merry Christmas!"

    a new letter opener!

Welcome to SRP Salisbury! You have a Mawson, S & Sons, Sheffield, England razor there if I'm not mistaken. The handle looks to be possibly bone or bakelite. But most blades from Sheffield are quality shavers. If you get her cleaned and honed, you'll be quite happy with her! If you need any help getting her honed, Utopian is a good guy to do it! Welcome, and if you have any questions, you can pm me also! I'd be happy to try and answer any questions you may have! Were all in this "Brotherhood" together!
