Thanked: 13249I am willing to bet that if you took two Dovo's, one SS, and one CS, and niether had markings, that very, very, few could tell on the hones, and even fewer if any on the shave....
We need to set that up at the next big meet up, that would be fun....

We are looking at Carbon steel as one kind of steel and stainless as another. In reality there are hundreds of kinds of steel, some so high in carbon they cannot be stainless, and others so rigged with **** they are stainless. 440 steel is the stainless steel we all knokw and love in our everyday lives. If I remember right, stainless steel in razors is actually closer to carbon steel than it is to 440 steel. The element make up definitions are so complicated that they don't bother naming it for the consumer. Its either stainless or not. So unless we knew what kinds of carbon steel and stainless steel dovo was using on these particular blades, a lot of these tests are a shot in the dark because we don't know their very important material properties, other than stainless or not- which can only be tested by... staining!
On to my next point, you should only buy something you think is perfect. This combines price, features, and wear. Since you have bought it obviously the price and features were right. You initially did not want a SS razor, or even worse, a carbon razor with a SS stamp. So send it back. UNLESS... you would prefer a SS razor, and it IS SS then keep it, or you like the SS stamp on a carbon razor. But that is up to you. Jus tpointing out from an economic standpoint, you made your choice as to the price, features and condition, and what you got was not that. It is up to you to decide whether it is now worth more to you, or less to you, as ultimately, you are the one benefiting/losing from this deal.

Welcome to SRP! Hey, I'm with coachmike on this one! It being your first razor, don't really worry to much about the composition of the blade. Of course unless it is just for the knowledge of what it is made of. You have now entered into a zone called "Straight Razor Zone" from wich there is no return! It is a zone of both time and space...No wait, I've been watching to many "Twilight Zone" reruns again! But actually most of us here, I believe I can be safe in saying, are suffering from RAD (Razor Acquisition Disorder) which you probably will be soon! You'll have quite a few razors of many point styles, grinds and age! The nostalgia associated with these beauties is addictive! Enjoy the shave, keep her sharp and clean, and soon enough you'll have so many razors, you'll be able to shave with a different one every day of the week, if not month! Welcome!!!

Thanked: 4942Thanks for the pics. We will have to check with the Dovo folks on this, but definitely seems to be an error. These have always been carbon as far as I know. Let me know if want to send this one back as I would like it for my personal collection. This is killer in the SS. We are checking to see if any others like this in the batch. I hone so many of these that I never even paid attention to the stamp. Will from now on.......lol.
Have fun,
Lynn

Thanked: 1so Lynn,
you are thinking taht the blade is stainless? I think I will keep it, I shaved with it this morning, my first straight blade shave ever. Went OK cheeks are fantastic better tan the old 3 blade disposal even on the first shave, the rest of my face went OK but I had to redo all the hard parts with my disposable, only one small nick.

Way to go Jon! Sounds great! Soon you won't even pick up that 3 blade! I also have a Dovo exactly like the one you are talking about, and you will love the shave!

That is a good razor and you are well on your way, I would treasure it, seems to be a bit of a curiousity.

Thanked: 586Stainless steels are (generally speaking) steel with chromium added. The chromium tends to repel corrosion. 300 series stainless steels contain both chromium and nickel. The nickel makes them non or less magnetic. 400 series stainless does not contain nickel and some of those are magnetic.
Be that as it may, I like all the Dovos I have and I treat them all as equals whether they are branded with some silly badge or not. Stainless schmainless who cares? Keep it sharp, clean and dry it when you are finished.
Oh and by the way, any stainless steel will rust if it has not been properly passivated.Last edited by icedog; 07-09-2009 at 07:31 PM.
