Thanked: 0Making the Switch - Mach 3 to Straight Razor
With the economy the way it is due to past and now current federal officials and our overall government leaders ignorant decisions and willing to make the people of the United States slaves to financial terrorists aka (banksters) through just plain insane over spending. I and my family have been making a lot of changes in order to save money and prepare for what appears to be a dark future. Overall this is just about that old boy scout slogan "Be Prepared".
We've done the few year food storage thing and been storing water in 50 gal. drums. Built a green house to start growing fruits, grains and vegetables on our own. Been stocking up on guns and ammo since the constitution of the united states and the oath our federal officials to honor preserve and protect the constitution just doesn't seem to mean anything to anyone any longer.
And now its time to go back to our roots and begin to use the Straight Razor. The plastic razors I and the wife have been using for just a few years now since I haven't had to shave that long (2 years now) are just too dang cheap and repetitively expensive. When you step back and look at whats going on over the course of a lifetime you waste a ton of money on the Mach 3 whatever Bologna I'm a sucker too through great advertising. Sure they are easy to get and use but so wasteful over time when you really sit down and think about it.
So its time for us to upgrade permanently to the Straight Razor. With that being said I need some advice from the pro's I've read the beginners guides and seen all the options and I know I need to invest in not only a few Straight Razors for myself and the wife but we need a hone to keep them sharp every few years and lastly we need a strop. The Soap and lather etc we feel we got covered. Mostly were looking for the right tools to last a life time. What matters to me as much as preformance is durability. Not looking for anything gold plated really. I'd rather spend the extra funds on ammo or guns as I am a pretty big gun collector now (inspired by Obama).
So straight up what straight razors, strop, and hone will we be satisfied with and depend on to last us a lifetime?
Maybe there's a great starter/lifetime kit I haven't seen for sale somewhere.
Thanks for your time

One razor would actually do for the two of you, but then again she wont like to shave her legs with your razor and vice versa. So two razors, two brushes, one strop and one barbers hone as well as the soap of your choice, I would splurge here at least for the time being(www.thegentlemansquarter}, you can always wait for hard times to use the Williams Mug Soap readily and cheaply available at Walmart and most drug stores. I would suggest a 6/8 ths razor from the classified here at SRP, and for her I would suggest she talk to the ladies in the Ladies Forum. I would also like to suggest that you keep your eye out in the Conversation thread, you may easily find a few like minded individuals, or at least someone to debate and exchange ideas with.Welcome to SRP!

Thanked: 190You are off to a good start with the above mentioned. I just wanted to be independent of my Mach 3 as I always cringed at buying new cartridges over and over again. I always seem to get ingrown hairs and I finally got fed up with it. Additionally, the market was becoming foolish with their new products which I realized was just hype. Since I switched, I don't get those bothersome ingrown hairs.
This can be a big long term saver and that was my original thought going into straight shaving besides getting a better shave for myself.
My plan started out great, but the passion for straight shaving grew and become a hobby. As a cost saver, well lets say it will take several years given what I have purchased which is an excess of what I really need. But again, this has turned into a hobby because I became such an enthusiast with straight shaving.
I can see why straight shaving got left behind with the advent of disposables, but the satisfaction factor of shaves and the overall condition of skin was lost. Knowing this is a lifetime change for me, I had no problem blowing the money on the extras.
The extra satisfaction of the shave, the superior results, and improve skin issues have been the big payoff of becoming proficient in straight shaving.
Welcome and Good Luck!

Thanked: 1so from the way you are talking, do you and your wife currently make your own soap? If so, just melt ya a bar, stick some organic clay in there and you got some great no frills shave soap.
