My Intro
Hey Everyone!
I'm a 29yr old Computer Science bachelors student, trying to save a few pennies by dumping the cartridges. So far, I've shaved with my "Magic" brand straightee that I bought at a local beauty supply store, and I can tell you which cuts are from which shave. Though I have to say, the last time, I've only used it 3 times this far, I only nicked myself once, on the upper lip.
Despite the cuts and nicks, I have tossed my Gillette Fusion, and will not use it again.
I must say, I love the whole "manly" shaving thing, with the brush, the cream, the mug, and a razor that could kill you. You know, we all laugh about that, but, really, there is something about shaving with something that is classified, by the several government agencies, as a deadly weapon.
I decided to get into this because of my younger brother, Stg. Clean Shave, on shavemyface.com. He got me looking into DE shaving, and I though, "I'll just take it the next step." So here I am. I figure, I'll keep shaving with my straightee for a few months, then I'll get me a nice, traditional, straight razor from the classifieds here. By then I should have a fairly good technique and be able to shave like a pro.
Anyway, it's good to be here with such fine gentlemen. I look forward to making a few friendships here.
P.S. I've got pictures of my razor and stuff on my laptop, so I'll post them for critique later today.Last edited by rcardon; 07-31-2009 at 09:07 PM.

Hey man, welcome to SRP. Im still quite new myself, but i made the move to straights for the same reason you did. Now when you say you were using the "Magic" brand straight, were you referring to their disposable blades? If so, thats a good start because now you know how a sharp razor should feel on your face.
A member here named HLBUD, sold me my first blade and i got anothre off of him. They are very sharp when they arrive and he is very helpful with anyquestions you may have (via email, or here on the forums).
Sorry to hear about your nicks and cuts, that sucks...but in time that will go away all together. Ive been straight shaving for a bit over a month and very rarely do i draw blood anymore.
Anyhow, welcome to the forums...im sure the experts will be in shortly to offer the advice that im not confident enough to give hah. Good luck

Thanked: 151Welcome. I think you will enjoy shaving once you get used to it. I know I do. The disposable is a great place to start. There is something neat about shaving with a straight though. I recommend when you get ready for a real straight to go vintage here in the classifieds and nothing less than 100 years old. You won't be disappointed, and you will be shaving with something truly historical.
Best Wishes!

You made a great decision! There's lots of info around (also in the Wiki), but don't hesitate to ask.

Thanked: 190You are doing great. I started with a Diane 21 so called hair shaper and it came with disposable blades. That is what I learned to straight shave with and although it was unforgiving, it gave me great BBS shaves. Although I use other straight razors today, I do use this as a travel razor and I still will work into the rotation every other round as I enjoy having the ability to straight shave with a variety of straight razors as I am always comparing.
The first few shaves were the roughest for me, but SRP was exceptional in helping me apply the proven techniques and moving up the learning curve. The other key tools that got me up to speed in the beginning were my Best pure badger brush and Col. Conk Soap. It was nice to have the straight shaving ability under my belt before I bought my first Dovo straight and strop.
Welcome to straight shaving! What started as a money savor is turning into a hobby for me!

Be careful with those disposible things. They are dangerous. I find them really hard to use. You should try a traditional straight soon, so much easier.

Thanked: 127Welcome to SRP!!!!
There is a ton of information here and you should start with the wiki. When I got out of the service in 1967 my sister was a hair dresser and I got my first straight razor from her, so it worked for me then and there is no reason it can't work for you now. When you get ready to move on remember that the most expensive is not necessarily the best. I have several razors in the 50 - $80 range that are my favorites. Keep an eye on the classified here for your next aquisition.
Good luck... and again WELCOME!!!
