First Time Shave, good start, upset ending
So I finally received my strop, purchased some shave soap at the farmer's market today and was ready to start my first shave.
I used the soap to get started and shaved my right and left side burns, as I was advised to start off with only that. It truly was a different experience, thrilling because it was so new to me. After the right side, I tried my left, but it took me a while how to best approach the shave since I'm right handed. I finished off with my regular razor and good tell a difference.
Good overall experience, no nicks, blood, or irritation. However, after I was done I cleaned the blade, washing off some of the soap that got on it and then it happened. I dropped that blade, it smacked the counter and fell to the floor. I guess I picked it up on an area with soap I did not notice. So part of the cutting edge got nicked, it's small but I'm ****ed with myself. I tried stopping it with the pasted side of my strop, but it still pulls a bit on the strop.Last edited by Niterider1784; 08-02-2009 at 11:26 PM.

Thanked: 259we all have done that, it happens. send it out to get honed, maybe look for a razor hone of the old style that are sold on ebay and some of the members here have to sell. just for touch up and such. i started back in march and now i have a norton 4000/8000 hone and am getting pretty good at it, as i am sure you will get with time. hopefully you will not drop it again and good luck in the future

Something very similar happened to me...
3 days after getting my razor back from a honing I hit the blade on my faucet! I did not see any chips on the edge, just a small burr. Well I shaved with it and I got the MOST PAINFUL razor burn. I had to send it back for another honing. Don't worry, it happens you will probably feel better when you send it to get honed.

Thats such a DRAG, I had an almost tonight.
The razor slide between my fingers while I was up by my face and it actually hit my face on the cheek. I was so surpised I did not cut myself there with that smack, It must of been so light but it felt SO hard when it happened.
Anyway good luck with getting yours honed and back into action.

Thanks, I thought I was the only dork to allow that to happen to them. Yes, I'm asking around to see who can hone it and see how much they'll charge me. If you have any recommendations I would appreciate it.

I would highly recommend Utopian, I sent him my blades and they shave great! He may still be offering free honing but I am not sure.

The first few months of straightrazor shaving is the "months of accidents". Sometimes being a little wary of the blade causes you to drop it. Lots of nicks the first few months as well.
Now the good news. Have your razor rehoned, and not all is lost. Get a practice strop because you strop is going to have some bad days too.
Hang in there and you will do fine.
