    Default Beginner Seeking Guidance

Zacsdaddy here. Not being very apt at the search function I would appreciate links to any member(s) that carry and sell beginner sets for straight razor shaving. Alternatively links to various sites that I could wile away the hours on would be equally appreciated.

Normally I don't talk this pretty - but ya'll seem pretty classy to a guy like me.

    Thanks in advance.

    Zacsdaddy

Edited to add. These are not listed on either the good or bad lists. What do ya'll think of them.

    Welcome to SRP,

You can find vendors in the vendors forum, which can be reached via the main forum page. You will also find the Classifieds useful, which can be reached via the main menu bar (top of this page).

In order to help new joiners find relevant information more easily, we have compiled a beginner's guide (cf my signature). Personally, I find this more convenient than wading through endless miles of archived threads - nothing more boring than yesterday's news, eh? Not to worry, though, the relevant threads are cross referenced.

Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress.

    Regards,
    Robin

PS Going through the list of vendors, you will find that there are interesting alternatives to the razor you linked to. As I said, best go through the beginer's guide.

Very eloquent! +1 on the classifieds. There are some great deals there. Even if nothing grabs you today, there'll be more tomorrow!

    Welcome along!

All good advice, add www.classicshaving.com in there too.
Dovo is a good razor to start off with. A lot of new guys get one pre honed by Lynn.
That way you know your screwing up and it's not the razor.

You can also click on the ads that show up on this site-- most online vendors have some form of beginner kits

Thanks for the quick responses guys.

I guess I should give a little history about myself.

I'm 51, currently a Printer living in North Texas (Wichita Falls) with a wife of 22 years, an 11 year old boy and a 9 year old girl. Until about a year ago the kids had never seen me without a full beard. Probably had it for around 19 years. After 4 years in the Marines I never wanted to shave again.

Around a year ago I renewed my drivers liscense and noticed how grey I had become. How does that happen?

About the same time my Mother gave me a shaving mug that had belonged to her Father (I'm named after him). I wanted a vintage straight razor to complete the set so I went to the barber I use and asked if he had any to sell. Since he dosen't use them any more he offered me the pick of the litter for $50.00 each with the exception of his Double Duck.

I picked a nice Anchor Brand that showed good care and usage but was hessitant to actually use it myself. Well this morning I tried shaving with one of those cheap single edge holders and was not standing in a pool of my own blood by the time I was finished so I may continue to pursue this.

Oh, and yes I will be going back to the barber for more razors (if he'll sell more).

The note that came with the shaving mug reads as follows.

    "Dear Tex:
I wanted to give this cup to one of my grandsons or great grandsons, but could not make a decision as to which one.
Therefore; I'm making you custodian of it until you decide which one gets it. I wish I could give it to each of them.
I bought the cup for Paul's Christmas gift on December 25, 1927 or 28, at Saul's Department Store, 7th and Indiana Street, Wichita Falls, Tex no zip no.
    Maggie Russell Johnson"

    It was dated 1994.

I'd like to think that the reason my Father gave it to me was that I was named for my Maternal Grandfather (I'm Russell Paul he was Paul Russell) and not the fact that I was the son that most needed a shave.

Thanks for listening and I'll be checkin' back in now and again to ask advise and generally cuss and complain.

If you are on a budget- Kenrup's Filly Strop over at ruprazor is the cheapest around- no frills, but good quality. If you're not on a budget, any of the aforementioned vendors'll hook you up really well. Sounds like you got a great shaver there!

And mad props on your story. The reason I started was I wanted to look like a bad ass (and got hooked and now I do it because its straight fun (sic, left because of the pun lol))

    Cheers!
