For me it was walking into wally world and seeing $20 bucks for just ten blades. Well that ticked me off, since I shave nearly every day that gets expensive. Then I thought to myself, wait a minuite-men have been shaving with straights for 2 centuries. After learning a few things about str8 razor shaving, it is now an almost daily luxery. I'm hooked now and try to tell others about this wonderful skill.

Thanked: 20I first got into it by pure hazard and that's pretty much when I decided to switch 100%...well.. maybe after my second shave with my Double Arrow.
Here's the story...
Went to the razor center with my friend to get him an hair clipper. As he was shopping I started looking around and saw a SS Dovo (dont remember exactly which model it was) and started chatting with the salesman and asked him what he thought the shave quality was like. He told me it was "really good" but that I should start with a shavette first. Shavettes sounded too much like Gillette to me so I dismissed the idea. But the very sexy Dovo razor stayed in my mind so I started scouring for information here and on B&B. Got some stones and a DA... first shave... ouch. Off of a Norton 4k/8k with bad stropping. My face was purple from the intense pulling. Next... I took my time... rehoned patiently with a very light touch (I had some experience from honing chisels and... it's NOT the same technique) and *whoa* the best shave I've ever got. That's when I figured I'd switch.
I gave my 350$ electric Panasonic (an abomination, shaves worse than a single blade bic) to my dad, who seems to like it very much and don't buy any more schick or Gillette blades. Ever...

Thanked: 0I got a job that required me to shave. After one month of using only hair clippers to shave as close as possible, my boss told me in a very stern/ultimatum like voice to shave. Found SRP and bougth an ok Shumate with some pitting. Went to my local CVS and bought a brush and soap for next to nothing. I sweated through my first shave and never looked back. I'm a lifer!

About 6 weeks ago I bought a straight locally and tried to shave with it. Needles to say it hurt. Razor was not shave sharp. 2 weeks later I bought a Dovo from SRD. Razor arrived on Friday, shave on Saturday with new shave ready (SHARP) razor and have not touched cartridge razor again!
I had not shaved in over 17 years as I wore a beard since it was not fun to shave with a cartridge.
I have just order another shave ready razor today, so I think I am addicted.

The first day I shaved with my Double Arrow from Kenrup I pitched my Gillette Fusion. I've probably saved double the cost of the startup package already just from not having to buy the damn refill cartridges. I used to only get 2 or 3 shaves out of a cartridge. I expect to get a lifetime of shaves out of just my original Double Arrow. Of course, that doesn't take into account my SR addiction. I just ordered two razors from Ebay this last week.

Thanked: 259it started when the store i shop at quit carrying the shave cream i used in a can. the others were more expensive and i decided to try shaving soap and liked it. then i stumbled across a video on youtube by lynn abrams and decided to order a DOVO razor from vintagebladesllc. i was of course a little nervous the first time, but with just a couple of nicks and the help of this site i finally got it right. i will NOT go back to disposable junk again.
for the first time in my 50 years i really enjoy and look forward to shaving and the time spent learning how to be even better at it..

Oh, good point 59caddy, the big reason I knew I would never need my Gillette again was because I actually loved shaving from the very beginning with the SR. I knew that even if I didn't get it right away it didn't matter, because instead of the drudgery that shaving with my Gillette was, I actually wanted to shave again the next day.
